With its emphasis on improvisation, stock characters, and a genial carnival atmosphere, the Commedia dell' arte (dating back as early as the 16th century) has never had much appeal to me; I generally find the productions thumb-twiddling after a while. I certainly had my reservations about Playhouse on the Square's current production, ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS, adapted by British playwright Richard Bean from a 1743 play by Venetian Carlo Goldoni. However, as much as I cringe at the thought of a play written in this tradition, at the opposite end I am very much a fan of British humor at its silliest - from the 1930's and 40's comedies of Will Hay (who, at least in a number of films, utilized his own kind of stock company) to the sketches of Benny Hill and Rowan Atkinson's delightful MR. BEAN (and wasn't there a group called MONTY PYTHON?) That said, Mr. Bean's sublimely silly little take on the Goldoni play, removed in time and place to early 1960's Brighton, has a plot that bounces from corner to corner of the proscenium like a ping pong ball on Ritalin.
Angels in America by Tony Kushner will be revived by Toneelgroep Amsterdam an directed by Ivo van Hove at BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave) on October 23 & 24 at 7 p.m. and October 25 at 6 p.m. The production will feature set and light design by Jan Versweyveld, costume design by Wojciech Dziedzic, video design by Tal Yarden and music by Wim Selles. In Dutch with English titles.
Disguised lovers, tricky servants, and well-meaning parents cross and double-cross one another in Carlo Goldoni's 18th century slapstick filled, comic gem. The characters' search for a happy ending depends entirely on the wily servant Truffaldino, who is constantly on the lookout for a decent meal. Truffaldino's attempt to double his wages by being the servant to two masters unravels with delicious mayhem.

After being fired from a skiffle band, Francis Henshall struggles to make ends meet by taking on the employ of two different bosses, neither of whom is aware of the other. Ruled by his baser natures, his struggles to fulfill his need for food, for sexy bookkeeper Dolly, and just to save his own skin, rule this hilarious and chaotic comedy.
There has barely been a bad word said about this show since it debuted on Broadway in 2012 (racking up seven Tony nominations), but because I didn't know much about it, I took a while to settle into the comedic rhythm of Georgia Shakespeare's production of ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS. However, once I realized that the show was far more farcical than I at first realized, it became one of the most laugh-out-loud, joyous nights of theatre I have had in years. So, if you go and see this show (which you absolutely should) simply give into the goofiness; you will thank me when you do.
