Sound Theatre Company Nominated for 7 Gregory Awards, Including Theatre of the Year

Despite a budget that is literally millions of dollars less than Seattle's oldest and most established theater's, Seattle's Sound Theatre Company is nominated for 7 awards in 7 categories. Not only is Sound Theatre Company looking to win a plethora of honors on October 24th but this relatively small organization has already garnered 4 People's Choice Awards as voted on by the region's theatre-going public. The Gregory Awards hosted by Theatre Puget Sound is the regionest largest honorarium of excellence in the field of live theatre.

BWW Review: SCT's Uneven LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT Has Moments but Not Enough

It's tough when you see a play that has some really amazing moments but also sits there and screams, "My God I need an editor!" Such is the case with Stephen Adly Gurgis' "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" currently performing at the Center Theatre from Sound Theatre Company. Not only could Gurgis do with trimming down this piece that tends to ramble but the folks at SCT could do with tightening their performances as well. But we'll get to that in a minute.

Sound Theatre Company Continues 10th Season with THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT

Sound Theatre Company continues its tenth anniversary season with Stephen Adly Guirgis' expressionistic courtroom fantasy The Last Days of Judas Iscariot.  The Last Days of Judas Iscariot dramatizes a court case to decide the ultimate fate of Judas Iscariot which utilizes flashbacks, testimonials, and interrogations of such witnesses as Mother Teresa, Caiaphas, Saint Monica, Sigmund Freud, and Satan, among others.  The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is a hilarious, poignant, thought-provoking work by Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis. Contains mature language.

BWW Review: INDIAN INK from STC and Pratidhwani Blends History and Heart

When you go to see a Tom Stoppard play such as "Indian Ink", currently playing at Center Theatre from Sound Theatre Company and Pratidhwani, you can expect to be immersed in whatever subject Stoppard has chosen, whether that be literature, history, math, music or landscape architecture, along with a fascinating interpersonal story with the characters. And while I usually appreciate the interpersonal stories of his plays, his chosen subject of interest is usually lost on me (mostly due to the feeling that you need to take a Masters class in whatever the subject is before you see the play to totally get it). Stoppard's "Indian Ink" is no exception although the love story at its heart certainly outweighed any gaps of historical knowledge I felt.

Sound Theatre & Pratidhwani to Present Tom Stoppard's INDIAN INK

Sound Theatre Company contributes to the hot Northwest summer with the steamy, smart Seattle premiere of Indian Ink by Tom Stoppard. This passionate tale that explores art and colonialism, set on two continents and in two eras, is a co-production with South Asian cultural organization Pratidhwani, and is directed by Andrew McGinn.

Photo Flash: First Look at Sound Theatre Company's BLOOD RELATIONS

Sound Theatre Company's Seattle professional premiere of Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock continues its limited run at Center Theatre at the Cornish Playhouse Studio, 305 Harrison St. through September 27. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!

BWW Reviews: STC's BLOOD RELATIONS Is Overly Complicated

Many have attempted to fictionalize the tale of Lizzie Borden. Hell, there's even a rock musical version of the story (that is awesome, by the way). Why? Because we all love a scandal. If this had happened today it'd be all over the news-tainment channels and internet for days (until the next scandal comes along). So authors and producers keep coming back to it especially since she got away with it, assuming she really did it at all. No one really knows for sure. And while the tale still lends some fascination, the current retelling in Sound Theatre Company's production of "Blood Relations" manages to get unnecessarily complicated while not really conveying much that's interesting or enlightening about the story.

Sound Theatre Company Opens BLOOD RELATIONS Tonight

Sound Theatre Company completes its eighth season with the Seattle professional premiere of Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock, in partnership with GianT Projects. Blood Relations is a tense thriller based on the historical facts and speculation surrounding Lizzie Borden, who was charged with the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother. Ten years after her acquittal, Lizzie is pressed by her lover to reveal what happened. Lizzie has her re-enact the events in her place, facing the same choices with startling results.

BWW Reviews: Faustian Silliness in Arouet's DON JUAN IN CHICAGO

I must apologize, Dear Readers, for getting this one to you so late. But alas when the Mothership beckons I must go. Unfortunately it meant me coming late to the party that is Arouet's production of David Ives' 'Don Juan in Chicago' which leaves you only two more chances to see this hilarious production, which I urge you to do. Some beautiful direction and a killer ensemble make this bit of Ives' deliciousness even more fun.

Arouet Presents DON JUAN IN CHICAGO Tonight

Taking place in both 16th-century Seville and modern-day Chicago, David Ives' Don Juan in Chicago blends the classic stories of Don Juan and Faust. In this new creation, Don Juan sells his soul to the devil to live forever and to discover the meaning of life through knowledge... but he'll also have to learn the art of seduction. A rip-roaring, fast-paced comedy in prose and verse, this play explores the emotions that can be attached to both love and sex.

DOGG'S HAMLET, CAHOOT'S MACBETH Launches Sound Theatre's 7th Season Tonight

Sound Theatre Company launches its seventh season with a seldom-performed pair of works by Tom Stoppard, Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth. Stoppard's smart, witty and gleeful word-play combines a thought experiment from Ludwig Wittgenstein with repression of art in the Soviet Eastern bloc to illuminate the power that language has in our world.

BWW Reviews: AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY at Balagan – Stunningly Powerful

If you've seen it you know you love it. "August: Osage County" has got to be one of the most powerful stories to grace the stage in quite some time. And soon everyone will love it as it's about to be turned into a movie due out next November with a powerhouse cast. But until that time you can still visit with the Westons right here in Seattle with the regional premiere of this stunning work brilliantly put up by Balagan Theatre.

BWW Reviews: Two Very Different Holiday Treats With BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT and SANTALAND at SPT

Not to let Christmas go by unscathed, Seattle Public Theater has cooked up two somewhat off kilter Christmas shows this year. Each containing something for theater goers of all ages, they may not be your typical holiday fare but they are a breath of fresh air from the norm and both left this jaded audience member thrilled to have a little something extra slipped into his eggnog.
