What's a daughter to do when she wants to get in touch with her father who she hasn't seen in 16 years and who lives 3,000 miles away? Well, if you're Libby Tucker you hitch hike and bus your way across the country with nothing but a backpack full of dreams and spare socks. Libby travels from Brooklyn to Los Angeles ostensibly to break into movies but mostly because she needs to find out why her dad and left, and does he still love her.

As always, Connecticut's professional theaters offerered a bountiful selection of excellent theater in 2013. It's hard to pick just a few, but here are some of the year's standouts from the theaters I cover for BroadwayWorld.com:
This holiday season, BroadwayWorld brings you a look at some of our favorite shows playing across the country. Take a break from the hustle and bustle and treat your family to some of our theatrical favorites, now playing nationwide.
Ivoryton: It's Christmas Eve in Dublin - the shops are closing, the night is drawing in and the wind would skin you alive. But at The Bells Pub and Guest House, a few stragglers remain by the fire, sharing a glass of holiday cheer and stories from both sides of the Atlantic. Will the Americans catch their flight home in this terrible weather? Will Paddy ever catch that pesky mouse? And are those boys really who they say they are? The Bells of Dublin, a new holiday show conceived and directed by Playhouse Executive/Artistic Director, Jacqueline Hubbard, will premiere at the Ivoryton Playhouse on December 12, 2013. "For 345 days a year, we work around the clock here - maintaining this beautiful building and producing 7 amazing professional shows. The holiday show is our chance to have some fun! I wanted to put together a show with some great music - traditional Irish and American - a little bit of magic and a lot of laughs. So - here 'tis!"

Mystery fans will delight in director Russell Treyz's sharp, stylish rendering of SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE FINAL ADVENTURE, currently playing at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina in Hilton Head.
The play is as much a love letter from Burns to his comedy partner and wife and a tribute to his friendship with comedian Jack Benny as it is a memoir of his career, which spanned 90 years until he turned 100.

If you are a fan of the songs of Neil Sedaka, BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO, featuring 19 tunes performed by an enthusiastic ensemble at Ivoryton Playhouse, then love will keep you together. The implausible book concocted to link the songs together in Broadway-show fashion, however, might cause a little laughter in the rain.
