PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT Comes to Playhouse on the Square

Based on the smash-hit movie adored by fans for decades, Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical is the heartwarming, uplifting adventure of three friends: Tick, Bernadette, and Adam, a glamorous Sydney-based performing trio who agree to take their show to the middle of the Australian outback. They hop aboard a battered old bus (nicknamed Priscilla) searching for love and friendship but end up finding more than they ever could have dreamed.

The Circuit Playhouse presents DEARLY DEPARTED

In the backwoods of the Bible Belt, the Turpin family has just suffered the loss of their father, but their problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Firstborn Ray-Bud drinks himself silly; Junior, the youngest son, is dealing with financial ruin, monster no-neck kids, and a wife who suspects him of infidelity (in the family car); last, but certainly not least, their spinster sister, Delightful, copes with death as she does life, by devouring mountains of junk food. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn to their friends and eccentric community of misfits who pull together to help them through their hours of need. Dearly Departed proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious.

Playhouse on the Square Presents PETER PAN

Playhouse on the Square is proud to announce our 25th anniversary production of the beloved classic Peter Pan! Wendy, Michael, and John Darling are in for the adventure of their lives when Peter Pan comes swooping into their nursery one seemingly average night. Featuring songs such as "I Gotta Crow" and "I'm Flying," this timeless tale of fun, adventure, and of course, never growing up is the perfect holiday treat for audiences of all ages.

BWW Review: King Charles III Rules at Playhouse

KING CHARLES III closed on Broadway earlier this year. And though it won an Olivier Award, I suspect this regional premiere will be a rare opportunity to see this show -- or at least a quality production of it. Done right, as it is by Playhouse on the Square, it's an absorbing and memorable evening of theatre. Anything less could spell disaster because bringing this plausible alternate world to life is quite a feat.

Playhouse on the Square to Present SISTER ACT, 6/17-7/10

?The final musical in the Playhouse on the Square 2015 - 2016 season is Sister Act! When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put into protective custody in a convent! The New York Times cries "when the wimples start quivering, the pinched mouths break into sunbeam smiles, and the nuns start rocking to raise the gothic rafters, all's right in the kingdom of musical comedy." Based on the hit 1992 film of the same name, Sister Act is filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing, and a truly moving story.

BWW Review: Strong Cast Inhabits THE COUNTRY HOUSE at Circuit Playhouse

Bucolic setting are wonderful . . . until it rains and everyone is wall-to-wall unpacking their baggage, airing their dirty laundry, calling each other on the carpet, and climbing the walls. At least that's what happens in THE COUNTRY HOUSE by Donald Marguiles. It's an explicit homage to Chekhov -- sort of an UNCLE VANYA and THE SEAGULL mashup. I wasn't knocked out by the script. The setup is simple, the plot predictable, the conflicts obvious. The actors have to bring a lot to this show to make is worth watching. Fortunately, Director, David Landis, had an exceptional cast.wisecracks into heated discussions simply to hear them sizzle.

Photo Flash: First Look at THE COUNTRY HOUSE at The Circuit Playhouse

In THE COUNTRY HOUSE, what The New York Times calls 'a valentine to the artists of the stage,' a group of famous and would-be-famous creative artists have come to their summer home during the Williamstown Theatre Festival. The weekend takes an unexpected turn, and everyone is forced to come to terms with the roles they play in each other's lives. Scroll down for a first look at The Circuit Playhouse's production below!

BWW Review: Circuit Entrances With PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL

I remember when, in the 1930's Shirley Temple vehicle POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL, poor Jack Haley and Alice Faye had to implore, 'You've Gotta Each Your Spinach, Baby'; and in Circuit's charming (and short) production of PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL, with Book and Lyrics by Elizabeth and Victoria Kern and Music by John Gregor, poor 'Mr. and Mrs. Pinkerton' (gleefully played by Marc Gill and Brooke Papritz) have a similar problem with their daughter 'Pinkalicious' (the engaging Carly Crawford, A.K.A. 'Peter Pan' during the Christmas holidays). It seems that the color-preoccupied pint-sizer has a condition known as 'Pinkititis,' wrought by an immoderate obsession with . . . dare I say it? . . . pink cupcakes -- MUDDY'S BAKERY, GIGI'S CUPCAKES, lock your doors!

PINKALICIOUS to Play Circuit Playhouse

Kid approved favorite Pinkalicious is coming to The Circuit Playhouse! Based on the popular children's book Pinkalicious, this family friendly musical centers on Pinkalicious who can't stop eating pink cupcakes! Despite warnings from her parents, Pinkalicious ends up diagnosed with Pinkititis which turns her pink from head to toe. At first, it seems like a dream come true, but when it goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure a way out of this pink predicament.

AMERICAN IDIOT Set for Playhouse on the Square

Playhouse on the Square is proud to present the regional premiere of Green Day's American Idiot! American Idiot follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans, lead by friends Johnny, Tunny and Will, as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunney enters the armed forces, Michael is called back home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny's attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. This high-octane show includes every song from Green Day's album American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.

BWW Review: Out of the 'Flying PAN' and Into the TUNA Casserole

Whether it's fruitcake or eggnog, people love their traditions during the Holiday Season -- and you'd better not disappoint. Memphians are accustomed to cranky 'Ebeneezer Scrooge' hoarding his coins at Theatre Memphis, and in midtown, we're resigned to A TUNA CHRISTMAS at Circuit and PETER PAN at Playhouse on the Square. Just last year, I had seen two -- yes, TWO -- productions of the latter: The version done live on NBC (with an off-center, almost 'sleep walking' Christopher Walken as 'Captain Hook') and the marvelous version directed and choreographed by Jordan Nichols and Travis Bradley at Playhouse. The Playhouse featured players were the unique Morgan Howard (as 'Peter') and the versatile David Foster (as a 'Jack Sparrow'-like 'Hook'); they were alternating the roles with Carly Crawford and Bill Andrews. I am happy to report that I finally was able to see Ms. Crawford and Mr. Andrews assay those roles, and they were equally inspired casting choices (but more about that later).
