Dozens of shows celebrated opening nights over the past twelve months, making 2014 a truly epic year in theatre. While some of those shows are still around and others have already wrapped up their Broadway runs, all of them had equally thrilling opening celebrations- welcoming celebrities of the stage and screen to the red carpet. The Public Theater's HAMILTON begins performances on Tuesday, January 20 and has been extended through March 22 with an official press opening on Tuesday, February 17. HAMILTON is now completely cast. The five final cast members are Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Shuyler, Maria Reynolds); Andrew Chappelle (Swing); Alysha Deslorieux (Swing); Javier Muñoz (Hamilton Standby); and Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan, James Madison). Earlier today it ws announced that Side Show will close at the St James Theatre in January, and according to the New York Times, Something Rotten! might takeover the space. A New York City developmental lab was held this fall, under the direction of Casey Nicholaw. Leading the cast (of the Lab, and not necessarily future productions) were Christian Borle, John Cariani, Allen Fitzpatrick, Brian d'Arcy James, Beth Leavel, Brad Oscar, Kate Reinders, Jeff Steizter, and Gerry Vichi.
Red Bull Theater today announced a new three-part collaboration with the Shakespeare Society exploring Shakespeare and the Jacobeans on Film. The series includes a Shakespeare Society major member event (open to the public) and two film screenings. The Public Theater presents the world premiere musical HAMILTON, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Inspired by the book 'Alexander Hamilton' by Ron Chernow and directed by Thomas Kail, Hamilton begins performances on Tuesday, January 20 and will run through Sunday, March 22, with an official press opening on Tuesday, February 17. Creator Miranda took to Twitter today to post pictures from backstage, and you can check out two shots below!

On September 19, 2014, some of the biggest stars on Broadway were invited to perform at a benefit concert for the Amigos de Jesus Orphanage (http://www.amigosdejesus.org/) and the children of Honduras. I have to admit that I was very excited when I read that veteran actor Michael Winther would be returning to Center Stage to star in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical NEXT TO NORMAL. It was Director David Schweizer who asked Winther to come to Center Stage for the role of Dan. Schweizer also directed Winther back in 2007 when he played the role of Dromio in BOYS FROM SYRACUSE along with Manu Narayan and Paolo Montalban. Winther became friends with Narayan when the two both worked on Broadway at the same time, Narayan was the star of BOMBAY DREAMS at the Broadway Theater and Winther was down the street at the Winter Garden in MAMMA MIA! Winther related it was Narayan who called him up last year to take Narayan's place in San Paolo, Brazil to perform in the KIezmer musical THE NIGHT IN THE OLD MARKET PLACE. So Winther spent ten days in Brazil along with another actress from the BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, Charlotte Cohn.
Primary Stages just held their annual Gala last night, November 3, 2014 at 583 Park Avenue. The event celebrated the company's 30th anniversary and honor Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies and award-winning producer, Julian Schlossberg. The Dolphin Show, America's largest student-produced musical, announces TITANIC as the 73rd Annual Dolphin Show. TITANIC is to be directed by Communication senior Brendan Flynn and produced by Communication senior Jack Eidson and School of Education and Social Policy senior Izzy Garcia, with support from a cast and team of over 150 Northwestern University students. TITANIC will run for five performances from January 23rd through January 30th in Cahn Auditorium, with tickets going on sale to the general public December 1st.
