BWW Reviews: Delightful Musical Revue Rings in Christmas at the Good
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Dec 8, 2014

Portland's Good Theater celebrated Christmas with a delightfully conceived and stylishly performed musical revue, Broadway at the Good Theater, created and directed by Brian P. Allen. Devoted to the music of the 60s and showcasing both Broadway show tunes and other iconic popular melodies, this almost forty-song evening flows seamlessly through the diverse music of the decade. Allen's selection of numbers reads like an index to the masterpieces of that tumultuous decade, and yet, he is astute in selecting some of the lesser-known production numbers together with the undeniable blockbusters. Moreover, he knows how to weave them together subtly to chronicle an era, and he provides musical staging that is characterful, but just right for the context.

BWW Reviews: Radiant Revival of THE RAINMAKER at the Good Theater
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Oct 6, 2014

Portland's Good Theater opened its thirteenth season with a radiant revival of N. Richard Nash's 1954 play, The Rainmaker. The production, perfectly cast, sensitively directed and acted, and capped by an attractive physical production, speaks volumes about the virtues of this little company. Nash's play, set in a western ranching town crippled by drought, is a bitter sweet tale of a young woman imprisoned in her self-image of plainness and of the charismatic con man who brings not only rain, but also the healing power of dreams.

Joe Orton's frenetic farce, What the Butler Saw, opens at Theater at Monmouth on Friday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m. The perfect blend of Oscar Wilde's wit, Monty Python's physical comedy, and Benny Hill's lewdness, What the Butler Saw bursts with mistaken identities, catastrophic complications, and rapid-fire dialogue. Orton's ribald examination of societal attitudes toward sexuality is a rampaging celebration of licentiousness and free-will.

BWW Reviews: Good Theater's UNDERWATER GUY Lifts Performance Art to the Poetic
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Apr 14, 2014

Portland's Good Theater closed its season with a highly original and poetic premiere of Stephen Underwood's multi-media performance piece, Underwater Guy. Underwood's play uses video, music, lights, scenery, and a single actor/narrator to recount the protagonist's lifelong obsession with diving, underwater exploration and photography. Part documentary, part dramatic monologue with movement, the rapid shifts in the modes of communication prove stimulating, sometimes surprising, but always engaging. For in Underwood's play, water is more than a habitat or a passion; it is a metaphor for his life's journey, and as such, the piece takes on a deeper significance and resonance.
