For the second time, the Broadway at Birdland concert series welcomed internet sensation Randy Rainbow on the historic stage, this time with his Pre-Inaugural Situation. The show was awash in political parodies, news updates, outrageous humor, non-partisan insults and special guests, including Ryan Raftery, Molly Pope and Brian Nash, Gerard Salvador, and Hannah Rose DeFlumeri. Starting in the back of the packed Feinstein's/54 Below house with 'It's a New World' (Harold Arlen/Ira Gershwin), Molly Pope has your attention. The band has played the overture; now it is her turn, crooning in silence. As suddenly as the first number ends, you're launched into the energetic 'Gotta Have Me Go with You,' Pope working her way through the crowd to the stage to join Brian Beach and Danny Bevins, her pair of enthusiastic backup dancers for the evening and the final pieces of her very complete transformation into Vicki Lester.

If Valentine's Day gets you down, or you're the type that would generally prefer a dozen long-stemmed dead roses and a box of "mind your own business," then the return of the Broadway Villains Party is your antidote to Cupid's saccharine sweetness. After the success of the initial villainous soiree in the fall, your favorite baddies are back and feeling more evil than ever! The villains of Broadway are back to cure your wintry woes - with cobwebs, hexes, and a bevy of songs in minor keys.

Sitting in my seat watching Lance Horne and his many friends perform at NEW WORK NEW WORK I: EXTRAORDINARY DAYS at Joe's Pub, I couldn't help but feel like I was at a really great dinner party (if I were invited to dinner parties with some of the most talented artists in the city). The seats---and, in this case, the songs---were assigned, but the host didn't try and force conversation, and the whole affair was better for it. The purpose of the November 21 show, the first in a year-long residency, was for the successful composer and musical director to showcase his recent work, and, for new material, Horne's songs were quite polished.

Superlatives like 'transcendent,' 'heart-stopping,' and '[the] greatest' pepper reviews both of her live performances and work in the studio. Douglas' new show, STEVIE SONGS, which marked her 50th performance at Birdland, made clear why Clive Davis of The New York Times wrote, 'By the end [of a show], you want to her to carry on into the small hours.'
