Kurt Elling to Make Cafe Carlyle Debut, 10/13-17

GRAMMY Award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling makes his Cafe Carlyle debut with Elling Swings Sinatra, October 13-17. The five-night run will pay homage to the legendary male vocalist in celebration of Sinatra's centenary. Elling will lend his own voice to Sinatra's vast repertoire with reinterpretations of classic hits such as 'Come Fly With Me,' 'In the Still of the Night' and 'April in Paris.' These ever-familiar tunes will be transformed by Elling's superb vocal expertise, breathing new life into old favorites for today's audiences. At Cafe Carlyle, he will be accompanied by Clark Sommers on bass, John McLean on guitar, Jared Schonig on drums, Wayne Tucker on trumpet, Troy Roberts on tenor sax and Gary Versace on piano (Ted Rosenthal replacing Gary Versace on October 16 only).

Cabaret Convention Returning to Town Hall

It's an undeniable, outstanding, and extraordinary musical milestone, to be sure: 2015 marks the thirtieth anniversary of The Mabel Mercer Foundation! Not only has the organization survived the ongoing and vastly fluctuating public tastes in music, lyrics, and performers, it has proliferated and burgeoned in its three decades of commitment to the classic, "Great Popular Songbook" -- both past and present.

BWW Reviews: LINDA LAVIN's 'New' Show at 54 Below Is Formulaic Yet Still Entertaining

Linda Lavin's most recent show at 54 Below (which had a three-night run between June 4-6), Starting Over--"Because that's what I've done all my life"--illuminates a succession of chapters in her career. The show bears more than a little resemblance to a 2012 appearance at the same venue. There are repeated numbers, excessive, though entertaining anecdotes, and a feel I now find formulaic.
