To an audience used to the likes of today's television talent show formats -The Voice, American Idol with their fiercely competitive, instant celebrity emphasis and often abrasive judging - the annual Midcoast Maine's Got Talent seems to hark back to a gentler era and a more positive model to showcase aspiring performers. Each year the Brunswick Rotary Club puts together this gala as a fundraiser for its social and civic programs, but also as a community service to help nurture the arts in Maine and to create an audience for the creativity and expression that artists provide.

The Stratford Festival will present Linda Gaboriau's remarkable new translation of Michel Marc Bouchard's Christina, The Girl King. Written by one of Quebec's most celebrated playwrights, and directed by Vanessa Porteous, Artistic Director of Alberta Theatre Projects, the play makes its English language premiere at Stratford's Studio Theatre. Previews begin tonight, July 29, and the production officially opens on Thursday, August 14.

Playwrights' Workshop Montréal Presents 50 Years in the Making, 5/6

Playwrights' Workshop Montreal (PWM), Canada's oldest play development centre, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with 50 Years in the Making, a celebratory gala on Monday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Centaur Theatre. Hosted by CBC's Ann-Marie MacDonald and PWM's Artistic Director, Emma Tibaldo, the event will offer a glimpse into the past five decades of Playwrights' Workshop Montreal and feature staged readings of excerpts from the extensive PWM repertoire. The evening will be capped off with a reception and fundraising auction.
Fifth Annual Playwrights Retreat Begins in Stratford

The Stratford Shakespeare Festival's fifth annual Playwrights Retreat begins today and runs through October 20. This year eight writers from across the country will be in Stratford for the three-week retreat: Meg Braem (Calgary), Matthew Heiti (Sudbury), Daniel Karasik (Toronto), Kevin Loring (Vancouver), Bryden MacDonald (Halifax), Haley McGee (Toronto), Janet Munsil (Victoria) and Elyne Quan (Toronto).
