Multigenerational Dance Company Encourages Healthy Lifestyle Through Choreographed Dance

Dances for a Variable Population (DVP) will present three performances of Revival 2 - an outdoor public dance project that re-imagines the works of celebrated 20th century choreographers, taking place at iconic public spaces in New York City and featuring 50 non-professional senior dancers and seven legendary female dance artists.

The Classical Theatre of Harlem (Ty Jones, Producing Artistic Director), Pemberley Productions and Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre are proud to present Sancho: An Act of Remembrance. This timely theater production celebrates the extraordinary life of Charles Ignatius Sancho, an African man who was born on a slave ship and rose to prominence as a noted abolitionist, composer, social satirist and man of refinement in 18th century English society. Sancho makes his mark in history by becoming the first British-African to cast a vote in England in 1774.

Hispanic Society presents Capital Master Plan at a Legislative Breakfast

The Hon. Mark Levine, Council Member 7th District; the Hon. Ydanis Rodriguez, Council Member 10th District; and the Hon. Gale A. Brewer, Manhattan Borough President co-hosted a Legislative Breakfast and Presentation of the Capital Master Plan of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library on January 13th from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, located at Broadway between 155th and 156th streets. Philippe de Montebello, Chairman of the Hispanic Society, made the welcoming remarks and Mitchell A. Codding, Executive Director of the Hispanic Society, introduced the elected officials. Maria Romañach Architects presented the Master Plan of the Hispanic Society. 

HAILE KING RUBIE: SPEAKING COLORS Exhibition to Open New Gallery in Harlem

An exhibition of works by Haile King Rubie, a 26-year-old Harlem artist with Down Syndrome, will inaugurate the Clara Francis Gallery, a new Harlem art spot, July 27 to August 17, 2016. The exhibition, 'Haile King Rubie: Speaking Colors,' is primarily drawn from Rubie's 'art waves' of 2013 and 2015 and features contemplations of his otherwise inaccessible inner world. The new gallery space, located at 2070 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., is a welcome addition to Harlem's art district.

Photo Flash: Members of 'The Central Park Five' Appear for THE BULLPEN Talkback

Several members of 'The Central Park Five,' the group of five young black and Latino youths falsely arrested and convicted in 1989 for the brutal beating and rape of a white woman in Central Park, attended the February 7 performance of The Bullpen, the one-man, 18-character comedy written and performed by Joe Assadourian, (now playing through March 21) at The Playroom Theater (151 West 46th Street - just east of Broadway). Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson and Yusef Salam, three of the five members, participated in a talkback following the performance to talk about their cases, re-entry and life inside the prison system. NYC Parks Cuts Ribbon On New Robert L. Clinkscales Playground & Community Garden

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP yesterday joined State Senator Bill Perkins, Assembly Member Herman D. Farrell, Jr., former Borough President C. Virginia Fields, former Council Member Robert Jackson, President & CEO of Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement (HCCI) Derek Broomes, Community Board 10 member Deborah Gilliard, President & CEO of Harlem Memorial Community Development Inc. Frederick Wilson and the Clinkscales family to celebrate the opening of the new Robert L. Clinkscales Playground and Community Garden on West 146th Street in Harlem.

Kimmel Center Creative Music Program for Jazz Announces Monthly Meet the Master Series

The Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program for Jazz continues its popular Meet the Masters series engaging 25+ regional student musicians, ages 11-17, in master class workshops led by world renowned jazz musicians. On Saturday, November 10, the Meet the Masters workshop is led by one of the top tenor saxophonists and flautists, Gary Thomas, in the Merck Arts Education Center from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Legendary jazz trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi leads the master workshop on Saturday, December 22. These sessions are open to the public for interested musicians, students and teachers and jazz aficionados who would like to observe.

Restoration of Richard Rodgers Amphitheater at Marcus Garvey Park Unveiled

Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer; City Council Member Inez Dickens; Community Board 11 Chair Matthew Washington; Marcus Park Alliance President and Secretary/Treasurer Carla MacIntosh and Valerie Jo Bradley; City Parks Foundation Executive Director David Rivel; and Mary Rodgers Guettel, daughter of the composer Richard Rodgers and executive board member of the Rodgers Family Foundation, to cut the ribbon on $7 million in improvements to the restored bandshell and amphitheater at Marcus Garvey Park.
