BWW Interview: Multi-Talented Actor Ron Bottitta on his roles in WAKINGS! at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble

The ability to totally transform yourself into the physical, emotional and intellectual persona of another person so believably that audience members will see the character and not the actor is one of the most fascinating elements of live theatre to me. This is especially true for actors I follow, seeing them in several productions and always being surprised at the new person presented in front of me, often having nothing in common with the real personality of the actor. One such actor is Ron Bottitta, an English-born actor who has called the USA his home since 1980, who I spoke with about his characters in WAKINGS! at the Odyssey Theatre,

BWW Review: L. A. CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY “THE ONLY CONSTANT” IS CHANGE at The Odyssey Theatre

'The Only Constant' is a very interesting, provocative dance piece. It is a 55-minute piece, and the stamina needed to perform this work is exceptional. The dancers are uniformly strong and have a full understanding of the intent. This has been in development for a few years and is the work of Genevieve Carson, whose work is known for addressing the human condition. In this piece, she deals with how we affect and interact with one another, one thing leads to another and the fine line between composure and chaos. The style is Reactive; choreography and story line wise. The movement dictated the story line and the emotions felt were as a reaction to that movement. A part of 'Dance At The Odyssey 2019,' produced by Barbara Mueller-Wittman and Beth Hogan, it is a part of celebrating contemporary dance works created by Los Angeles Artists.

BWW Review: Absurdly Comic OLD CLOWN WANTED Gets West Coast Premiere at Odyssey

Inspired by a 1970 Federico Fellini film, OLD CLOWN WANTED centers on three aging clowns who compete for a job in a room with no windows and very little furniture, in which theater and circus arts are intertwined in an absurdist, cynical, tender and very funny look at aging and man's fear of uselessness in society. The entertaining and non-stop action in this new translation from the French by Jeremy Lawrence, is appropriately directed by Romanian-born Florinel Fatulescu, who has won numerous theater awards for his daring and innovative style. While the overall production seemed very Italian in nature to me, there was certainly enough Vaudevillian slapstick schtick to keep audiences laughing from start to finish.

BWW Review: Julia Migenes Lovingly Shares DEBUSSY: HIS LETTERS AND MUSIC at the Odyssey Theatre

Celebrated soprano Julia Migenes has returned to L.A. with the world premiere of DEBUSSY: HIS LETTERS AND MUSIC, her newest musical portrait of legendary French composer Claude Debussy. Her exploration of his life - his youth, his determination to find his own musical path while battling the more conservative musical world, and his great wit - begins with his actual letters, then integrates his music. Accompanied on piano by Manuel Arellano, currently a collaborative pianist and vocal coach at El Camino College whose fingers literally fly over the keys, the show is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Peter Medak who allows Ms. Migenes to shine brilliantly whether she is reading, singing, or interacting with the audience.
