The National Music Council has announced that jazz legends Chick Corea and The Manhattan Transfer will be honored at the organization's 35 th annual American Eagle Awards on Thursday, June 28 at the Summer NAMM Show in Nashville. The 100th birthday of the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein will be celebrated at the South Orange Performing Arts Center on Friday, March 16 at 8 p.m. with the Bill Charlap Trio. Charlap, long an admirer of the remarkable and charismatic Bernstein, received a Grammy Award nomination for his album Somewhere: the Songs of Leonard Bernstein (2000), and is well known for his interpretations of Bernstein's popular songs, mostly written for Broadway musicals like West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide.

Next month, the Harris Center joins Capital Public Radio in celebrating a historic moment in the history of jazz. The date was January 16, 1938 at Carnegie Hall the hallowed venue for respectable classical music. There, Benny Goodman's band played swing music for the first time, with one of the earliest racially-integrated jazz groups.
