Greensboro Arts Alliance Announces 2017 Mainstage Summer Season

The Greensboro Arts Alliance and Residency (GAAR), under the Artistic Direction of Sabra Jones, is proud to announce its 1st Annual Opera Festival as part of the 2017 Summer Season in Vermont. Heidi Lauren Duke choreographs & directs Mezzo-Soprano Martha Prewitt in Lee Hoiby's comedy Bon Appetit!, written about the legendary chef Julia Child, from June 30 - July 5, 2017, at the Town House (20 Church St.)  in Hardwick, Vermont.  The return of opera performance marks a full circle moment for Hardwick's historic Town Hall which was, in fact, built as an opera house in 1898.

BWW Review: Toronto is Head Over Heels for HIBLA GERZMAVA

Russia seems to be everywhere these days. Conductor and violinist, Vladimir Spivakov and the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra performed to an enthusiastic crowd at the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, Ontario. The evening was presented by Show One Productions, the same company that recently brought us the Trio Magnifico (Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov and Dmitri Hvorostovsky) and featured the Canadian debuts of cello soloist Danielle Akta and Russian opera diva Hibla Gerzmava.

BWW Interview: Kevin Newbury of THE (R)EVOLUTION OF STEVE JOBS at Santa Fe Opera

Kevin Newbury is a theatre, opera and film director who has staged over sixty original productions for numerous opera companies, festivals, and symphonies. Especially committed to developing new material, he has directed more than two-dozen world premieres of operas and plays. BWW Review: There's 'GOLD in Them Thar Hills as NY Philharmonic and Gilbert Take on Wagner's Gods

Just after hearing the wonderfully well sung, semi-staged DAS RHEINGOLD at the NY Philharmonic, under departing Music Director Alan Gilbert, I saw the current Broadway revival of THE LITTLE FOXES. It seemed Richard Wagner's gods and Lillian Hellman's Hubbards had lots in common: The small-minded, self-serving gods of this production, at least, could have been friends and neighbors of the mendacious, corrupt Southerners in Hellman's play (or even of a would-be-royal family in Washington, DC).

Bernard Labadie Makes Debut with Orchestra of St. Luke's at Caramoor

Bernard Labadie (photo: Francois Rivard) Hailed as “one of the most versatile and galvanic ensembles in the U.S.” (WQXR), Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) was first formally founded at Caramoor 38 years ago, and has long made the idyllic estate its summer home. Fittingly, then, it is at Caramoor – 90 acres of picturesque Italianate architecture and gardens in Katonah, Westchester, just one hour's drive from Manhattan – that French-Canadian conductor Bernard Labadie makes his eagerly anticipated OSL debut this summer, before launching a four-year tenure as the ensemble's new Principal Conductor in the fall of 2018. One of the world's foremost exponents of 18th-century repertoire, Labadie leads an all-Mozart program, pairing three early symphonies with the charming Concerto for Flute and Harp (July 2).

This Summer Marks the Final Season of BEL CANTO AT CARAMOOR

Opera at Caramoor (photo: Gabe Palacio) This summer marks not only the 20th anniversary, but also the final season of 'Bel Canto at Caramoor,' the program founded by Director of Opera Will Crutchfield to champion neglected bel canto operas and re-interpret familiar ones. To honor the program's legacy, Caramoor launches the summer season with a gala selection of bel canto's greatest hits in 'A Night of Italian Opera' (June 17) and presents a semi-staged account of Bellini's first bel canto masterpiece, Il pirata (July 8). Mounted in the superb acoustics of the outdoor Venetian Theater on Caramoor's idyllic Westchester estate, both events feature the resident Orchestra of St. Luke's and showcase the exceptional artistry of 2017 Artist-in-Residence Angela Meade - 'the most talked-about soprano of her generation' (Opera News) - who first catapulted to national attention in the title role of Bellini's Norma at Caramoor seven years ago. New Rochelle Opera Presents THE MERRY WIDOW

New Rochelle Opera, Westchester's longest running opera company, will present Franz Lehar's The Merry Widow, from June 22-25, 2017 in the Frank J. Auriana Theatre at the Ursuline School, 1354 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY.

Italian Opera, Bel Canto and Future of Conducting in Safe Hands with Carlo Rizzi

Ranking among today's leading conductors, Carlo Rizzi's vast repertoire ranges from the foundation works of the operatic and symphonic canon to rarities by Bellini, Cimarosa and Donizetti. He is in high demand as a guest artist at the world's most prestigious venues and festivals, not least for the insight and integrity of his musicianship and the visceral energy and psychological depths of his interpretations.

Diana Damrau to Release New Album 'Meyerbeer: GRAND OPERA' on Erato

Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) was in many ways the most successful operatic composer of his era. A rival to Rossini in the 1820s, he went on to become synonymous with the extravagant splendours of Parisian grand opéra and a major influence on French composers and the two titans of Romantic opera, Verdi and Wagner.

Dallas Opera Announces Cast Change for NORMA 5/7

The Dallas Opera has released soprano Elza van den Heever from singing the upcoming matinee performance of Vincenzo Bellini's NORMA on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., due to a family emergency.  Acclaimed Italian-Canadian soprano, Aviva Fortunata, will assume the role of the betrayed Druid priestess.

Angela Meade & Jason Vieaux are Caramoor's 2017 Artists-in-Residence

Angela Meade and Jason Vieaux (photos: Gabe Palacio) This summer, Caramoor welcomes back Angela Meade and Jason Vieaux as its 2017 Artists-in-Residence. Having first catapulted to prominence at Caramoor, Meade - hailed as "the most talked-about soprano of her generation" (Opera News) - was the natural first choice to headline this season's 20th anniversary celebrations of the "Bel Canto at Caramoor" series.

BWW Interview: Brenda Rae of LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR at Santa Fe Opera

Brenda Rae, a fast rising opera star in Europe, is now spreading her wings across the United States. She has a sound reminiscent of molten silver, a wide range, and a great deal of flexibility. At Santa Fe this summer she will sing Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, a romantic, bel canto opera about a real Scotswoman who lost her reason when forced to marry a man she did not love.
