Eve Theater Company opens its fifth season with Bathsheba Doran's play Kin. Year five always seems to be a milepost: a time for a company to take stock of itself and others. So I would note that this production seems to represent an important moment of maturity and ambition for Eve. It reaches for a subtlety and emotional range greater than most of their previous efforts. The company's mission of a focus on women led to early productions that featured small groups of women hermetically observed: aging prostitutes on a shared bench, or friends moving through marriage and divorces through the years. Most were casts of only women.

In 2017, Proper Hijinx is maintaining their commitment to contemporary works focusing on timely issues and relatable characters. We will begin the season with A Steady Rain by Keith Huff- a two-hander drama focusing on the lives and stories of two police officers that have been friends for a lifetime. Tensions rise through differing opinions and personal tactics as the plot unfurls. 'Though not the newest play of the season, it is one that I certainly see as timely', says artistic director Stefany Cambra. 'Societal tensions are rising and it's no secret that focus is turned towards law enforcement as we examine our expectations of those who are expected to protect and serve. I love this script for giving us an examination of the person behind the badge'. A Steady Rain will open the 2017 season, running from February 9- 19.

Bathsheba Doran, author of The Mystery of Love and Sex now on stage at Dobama Theatre, stated of the script, 'I had no plans for subject matter. I never do when I begin. As my play stormed out of me, unstoppable and violent, I was horrified. The experience was deeply unpleasant, emotionally. I was the most embarrassing of writers in the cafe where I worked: tears streamed down my face as I stabbed out the dialogue on my keyboard. I looked up once, just in time to see a nearby guy whisper amusedly to a girl: 'Whoa, she's really into it.'
