My Fair Lady is truly of the most perfect testaments of a musical success there ever was; from a plot filled with witty little criticisms to rather verbose songs about the triumphs of the human will, Lerner and Loewe's classic has captured the hearts of many since its premiere more than half a century ago. And indeed, why not? Everything about this musical is wonderful, and there is such a profound lesson to be taught towards it end, audiences have little choice but to be both charmed and at times slightly offended by the means in which the show's two main characters find reasons other that of a bet to remain civil towards one another. My Fair Lady is a wondrous lesson about perceiving people in a light that is completely different than our intuitions may dictate; it is about creating something out of nothing, only to discover that the "nothing" to be found in another was precisely what another may have been missing all along, making a life one may have originally been complacent with somehow partially unsatisfying and empty.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is one of the most oft-produced and popular musicals of all time and this week has welcomed both spectacular news and saddening news regarding the past, present and future of the beloved family-friendly musical. Iconic original leading man Theodore Bikel passed away at the age of 91 earlier this week, forever closing the book on the first man to ever sing 'Edelweiss', one of the score's most beloved gems, not to mention portray Captain Von Trapp in the original Broadway production. Yet, on the horizon looms a brand new national tour of the tuner set to star a brand new discovery named Kerstin Anderson in the role of Maria Von Trapp alongside a fresh-faced cast including Ben Davis, Ashley Brown, Merwin Foard, Dan Tracy and more, all under the direction of Jack O'Brien. Considering the legendary legacy of the beloved title, now is an ideal time to list ten of my personal favorite things pertaining to the rich history of the musical on stages and screens both large and small.

The oldest professional summer theater in America, The Cape Playhouse, presents its first-ever Playhouse production of Lerner and Loewe's triumph - My Fair Lady - July 28 through August 8. Tony Nominee Hunter Foster makes his Cape Playhouse directorial debut with the unforgettable story of Eliza Doolittle, the Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins so that she can pass as a proper lady. Broadway's Ashley Brown and Jeff McCarthy star in what is generally hailed as a masterpiece of musical theatre. Set against the gorgeous scenery and costumes of Edwardian England, My Fair Lady is filled with some of the greatest songs in musical theater history: Wouldn't It Be Loverly?, With a Little Bit of Luck, The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night, On the Street Where You Live, Get Me to the Church on Time and I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face. Sixty years ago today, Walt Disney dedicated his dream project: Disneyland - a land beyond the boundaries of the motion pictures with which he'd made his reputation, a park where families and guests of all ages could be immersed in worlds of fantasy and adventure.
