Janet Fish's PANOPLY to Open 2/13 at DC Moore Gallery

DC Moore Gallery has announced the opening of the exhibition Janet Fish: Panoply, which highlights major examples of the artist's work from 1989 to 2008. Fish's still lifes provide mesmerizing detail, and a captivating depiction of light and color, while hovering in a space between fluid painterliness and measured stillness. A catalogue with essay by Karli Wurzelbacher will accompany the exhibition.

WHEN THE GREEKS RULED EGYPT Exhibition on View at the Art Institute of Chicago Through July 2014

Drawn primarily from the Art Institute's permanent collection with key loans from private collections and the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago, When the Greeks Ruled Egypt, on view in Gallery 154 through July 27, 2014, explores this confluence of cultures through over 75 artworks including gilded mummy masks, magical amulets, and stunning portraits in stone and precious metals.

Rachel Rosenthal Company's INSTANT FAIR TALES Adds 2/8-9 Shows

The Rachel Rosenthal Company (RRC) presents Instant Fairy Tales, a brand new series of original fairy tales for the 21st century at Espace DbD in Los Angeles. Instant Fairy Tales: The Longest Winter, the series' inaugural offering, which features an allegorical tale about learning to care for the environment, will be held on Saturdays, January 25 and February 8, as well as Sundays, January 26 and February 9, 2014. The performances, by Rachel Rosenthal Company's TOHUBOHU! Extreme Theatre Ensemble, begin at 4:00pm and 7:00pm on Saturdays, as well as at 2:00pm and 5:00pm on Sundays. Instant Fairy Tales are particularly well suited for children and families. Seating in the intimate performance space is limited to 35 patrons per show. Tickets cost $5. Reservations are necessary to insure seats and can be made online via Brown Paper Tickets at instantfairytales.brownpapertickets.com. Instant Fairy Tales: The Longest Winter, the series' inaugural offering, which features an allegorical tale about learning to care for the environment, will be held today, January 25 and Sunday, January 26, 2014.

BE OPEN Launches the Young Talent Award

BE OPEN is launching a Young Talent Award to scout out emerging designers and give them support whilst they develop their work. This is part of the foundation's Inside the Academy strand, their innovative approach to supporting creative education, accompanying students from study through to professional practice.

Segerstrom Center to Host DO THE ARTS MAKE US BETTER PEOPLE? Panel, 2/11

Do the Arts Make Us Better People? That is the question at hand when The New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean, Getty Trust President and CEO James Cuno and Segerstrom Center for the Arts President Terrence W. Dwyer take part in a Zocalo Public Square panel discussion about the role the arts play in shaping our lives. This special event takes place in Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center on February 11 at 7:30 p.m. and will be moderated by Jori Finkel, contributing arts writer for The New York Times. There will be a free reception following the discussion.

Art Institute of Chicago's Society for Contemporary Art to Host 6th Benefit and Auction, 3/1

The Art Institute of Chicago's Society for Contemporary Art (SCA) is pleased to host its sixth benefit on Saturday, March 1, 2014. This year's event will be held at CineSpace Film Studios, Chicago's largest film studio space on the Near West Side. All proceeds from this biannual event will provide acquisitions support for the Art Institute of Chicago's Department of Contemporary Art, organizer of such recent internationally acclaimed exhibitions as Steve McQueen and Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective.

Standard & Poor Announces Upgrades to Art Institute of Chicago's Bond Rating

Standard & Poor's announced today that it raised the Art Institute of Chicago's long-term bond rating to AA- with a stable outlook from A+ positive outlook. In its release, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services cited numerous factors that contributed to the upgrade, singling out “strong institutional leadership and management to produce such results in a stressful economic environment” as well as a consistently sound operating performance and continued plan of scheduled debt reduction. The rationale also included the Art Institute's ratio of resources to operating expenses and debt; the prestigious reputations of both the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the museum of the Art Institute of Chicago; and the successful completion of the Art Institute's most recent capital campaign, for the building of the museum's Modern Wing, with 95% of pledges collected.
