The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre has become known for not only its productions of classic Broadway musicals but its part in bringing a number of area and regional premieres to the Frederick stage. In 2009, Way Off Broadway was one of the very first theatres in the country to receive the rights to produce The Wedding Singer, an 80's inspired musical comedy based on the Adam Sandler film. In recent seasons, the theatre, the Frederick -area's only year-round professional producing theatre, has produced several movies-turned-musicals. In fact, the 2013 Season was named "Hollywood Meets Broadway," all of the shows having been hits on the silver screen and Broadway stage.
Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people. Throughout the show, Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest, including Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad. On their way, they meet the Lady of the Lake, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight, and the Knights who say Ni.
Two years ago, The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, Frederick's only year-round producing regional theatre, celebrated its 20th anniversary season and opened with a beloved classic, The Sound of Music. To launch Way Off Broadway's new expanded six-show 2016 Season, the theatre will open with another classic, Anything Goes. The Cole Porter musical will kick off the season on Friday evening, January 15th.
The Children's Theatre at Way Off Broadway has become the place to see everyone's favorite storybook and fairy tale characters come to life on the stage. From its own original adaptations to those direct from the movies and television, the Children's Theatre provides entertainment the entire family can enjoy. The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre, the Frederick area's only year-round producing theatre, will present a 10th Anniversary special presentation of A Rock-n-Roll Golden Oldies Mystery, which was the show that helped launch Way Off Broadway's interactive murder mystery series, Marquee Mysteries. So popular was the show, that eleven more interactive mysteries have appeared at Way Off Broadway since, while even more are now produced outside of the theatre, including regularly on the Walkersville Southern Railroad.
Continuing Way Off Broadway's 20th Anniversary Season, the dinner theatre is preparing to welcome gun-slingers and cowboys to the stage this fall with Irving Berlin's musical comedy about the sharpest shooter in the west, Annie Oakley, with Annie Get Your Gun.
The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre's 2013 Season is the year Broadway and Hollywood meet with all of the productions at the theatre being hits both on the silver screen and Great White Way. For the fall, Way Off Broadway will be producing what can be called the epitome of a movie musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard.
