What if you could read about your own destiny and that of the world? Would you do anything to change it? Could you? It's 1919 in New York and the life of a young publisher is about to change forever. Max & Louie Productions proudly presents Richard Greenberg's brilliant comic fantasy about fate, ambition and loyalty.
Hit Latino play, La Luz De Un Cigarrillo (The Light Of A Cigarette), written and directed by award-winning Dominican playwright Marco Antonio Rodriguez (HOLA and ACE award for best play and best director), returns by popular demand this September for a two week limited engagement at Lehman Stages' Studio Theater in the Bronx.
Over the years I've seen a number of productions of THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennessee Williams, and they've varied in degrees of appeal greatly. There's even another production from another local company scheduled later this month. There's a reason; it's a classic. This play, based on the author's short story "Portrait of a Girl in Glass", can be a unique, involving experience in the hands of the right actors and director. Thankfully, Dramatic License Productions has put together a terrifically engaging presentation that's really true to its source, lyrical and magical, with the additions of a series of projections that set the mood by hinting at each scene's essence. It's a clever device, and with four very solid performances, this makes for a great combination that's very worth of your attention and time.
The Voilet Hour will be directed by Sydnie Grosberg Ronga, and stars Betsy Bowman, Jake Ferree, Drew Pannebecker, Monica Parks and Antonio Rodriguez. The show runs August 23rd through September 2nd, 2012 at COCA's intimate Black Box Theatre (524 Trinity Avenue, University City, MO 63130).
URINETOWN is a satirical musical based on the idea that an ecological disaster could create a situation whereby individuals have to pay for the opportunity to eliminate their wastes in public amenities. If that sounds like an odd concept, you're right, it is. And, with it's grungy atmosphere and grimy costuming, it might seem unappealing. But, Urinetown works because it makes fun of itself, and the conventions of musical theatre, while actually managing to communicate a potent message about conserving our resources and being socially responsible. There's also the clever, dense lyrics and engaging melodies of Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann. Stray Dog Theatre's current production is excellent and because of it drawing sell-out crowds the run has been extended.

Pete Townshend and the Who's seminal rock opera classic TOMMY comes to the stage of the Tower Grove Abbey courtesy of Stray Dog Theatre adorned in steam punk fashion and scenic design. It's an exhilarating show powered by solid performances, a tight band, and engaging direction that never lets the pace slow for a moment. This is one of the few evenings of theatre that left me feeling goosebumps up my spine as the cast took their bows. A definite must see experience!
Buddy Thomas takes the typical trappings of a romantic triangle and places them in a rundown New York apartment somewhere in Staten Island, with the twist here being that all the participants (in the triangle) are gay. THE CRUMPLE ZONE certainly has some entertaining moments and a few memorable lines, but unfortunately, it fails to spark. Part of this is the play itself, which recycles the situation with little verve or panache, and part of it is due to a lackluster presentation that's just a little too loose in execution, despite a fairly sharp cast, to succeed. Citilities Theatre is currently producing this fairly recent work as part of a double night of theatre, with SONGS FROM AN UNMADE BED taking the stage about a half hour after the initial show ends. I didn't see it in that manner, but those who do will find the latter far more engaging.

Move over Rocky Horror, and make way for EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL! Based on the 80's cult classic Evil Dead films, this show is hilariously campy and bursting with more farce than a Monty Python skit. Five college kids take a trip to a remote cabin in the woods and encounter everything from ancient evil spirits to revenge-seeking Candarian Demons. One outrageous, horror-filled moment leads to another as every attempt is made to ward-off the bloodthirsty villains. It's all ridiculous and wild, while the term 'Fresh Blood!' takes on new meaning!
