Edinburgh International Festival Launches 2017 Programme

???????Edinburgh International Festival today unveiled its 2017 programme which marks the event's 70th anniversary. This year's International Festival runs from Friday 4 to Monday 28 August, welcoming 2,020 artists from 40 nations to perform in Scotland's capital city.

World Music Virtuoso Anoushka Shankar Comes To Folsom

The Harris Center proudly presents a singular figure renowned in both classical Indian and world music. Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar has garnered five Grammy Award-nominations and the title 'Asian Hero' by Time magazine. She studied sitar under her father and guru, the late Ravi Shankar, making her professional classical debut at the age of 13. With 11 recordings to her credit (including Traces of You, which features Anoushka's half-sister Norah Jones, and Home, from which her Folsom program will be culled), 'her exquisite sitar playing...lives up to the virtuosity that made her the youngest woman ever nominated for a World Music Grammy' (Harper's Bazaar).

Singing Sensation Max Raabe & Palast Orchester Bring Berlin's Golden-Age Glamour to Chan Centre

Anda Union Unveil Forgotten Mongolian Musical Treasures in Canadian Debut

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents the Canadian premiere of Anda Union, the renowned folk group hailing from regions across Inner Mongolia, March 26 at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. The nine-member ensemble will captivate with a transcendent fusion of ancient sounds created through haunting throat singing and music performed on such rare instruments as the horse head fiddle and two-stringed lute.

The Chan Centre presents Noche Flamenca's ANTIGONA, A Fierce Union of Flamenco and Greek Tragedy

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents Noche Flamenca'sAntigona, their critically-acclaimed work fusing flamenco and Greek tragedy, March 12 at 7pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Adapted from Sophocles' Antigone, and starring Bessie-award winner Soledad Barrio as the lead, Antigona looks at repression, heroism and loss in a fiery, multi-media spectacle.

Pacific Symphony To Honor Composer Phillip Glass in Debut Carnegie Hall Performance, 4/21

Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, has been invited to perform for the very first time at one of the world's most prestigious venues, Carnegie Hall in New York City, in honor of one of today's leading composers, Philip Glass. Joining them will be Pacific Chorale, also appearing at Carnegie Hall for the first time. One of America's most revered composers, Glass is Carnegie Hall's 2017-18 composer-in-residence, where he holds the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair. With this season-long residency by Glass, Carnegie joined a yearlong celebration of the composer's 80th birthday, presenting performances that feature his classics and premieres. As part of the residency, orchestras from across the United States were invited to submit programs featuring important works by Glass in illuminating contexts. Pacific Symphony and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra were the two orchestras chosen, in part by Glass himself, to perform during Carnegie's upcoming season. Both orchestras emerged among competitors with what Carnegie called “very compelling programs.”
