Opera San Jose Presents BARBER OF SEVILLE, Closes 2/27

Rossini's delightful comic opera, The Barber of Seville will close on February 27, 2011 at Opera San Jose. The charming tale of a clever young woman, her eager lover, and their resourceful accomplice, Figaro, The Barber of Seville is a tuneful testament to all that's wonderful about fun and romance.

Puccini’s LA BOHEME Highlights Opera San Jose's Season

Opera San José presents Puccini's timeless classic La bohème. A story of young love set against the impoverished but joyous lifestyle of 19th-century bohemian Paris, La bohème is Puccini's most beloved opera and for many the quintessential opera. Eight performances are scheduled from April 23 through May 8 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San José.

Michael Attenborough will direct Kieran Bew (Man) Abigail Cruttenden (Angela), Lisa Dillon (Lucy) and Margot Leicester (Barbara) in the world premiere of David Eldridge's The Knot of the Heart which will run at the Almeida from 10 March - 30 April, with press night on 17 March 2011.

Opera San José continues its 27th Season with Rossini's delightful comic opera, The Barber of Seville. The charming tale of a clever young woman, her eager lover, and their resourceful accomplice, Figaro, The Barber of Seville is a tuneful testament to all that's wonderful about fun and romance. Eight performances are scheduled from February 12 through 27 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San José. This production of The Barber of Seville is made possible, in part, by a Cultural Affairs Grant from the City of San José. The madcap story unfolds fast and furious in 18th-century Seville, Spain. Young Rosina is a wealthy orphan and the ward of a grasping old codger, Dr. Bartolo, who is plotting to marry her not only for her beauty, but for her substantial dowry. However, Rosina has two things on her side: the handsome Count Almaviva, who has fallen in love with her, and the town barber, Figaro, her conniving accomplice, who through clever disguises and quick wit succeeds in securing victory for the young couple.

Murin-Led EMMA Begins Previews at The Old Globe 1/15

Jane Austen's Emma - A Musical Romantic Comedy, with book, music and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Paul Gordon and direction by Tony Award nominee Jeff Calhoun, will run in the Old Globe Theatre Jan. 15 - Feb. 27. Preview performances run Jan. 15 - Jan. 22. Opening night is Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Dolores Ziff, Patron Of The Arts, Dies At 85

Dolores Ziff, wife of Sanford Ziff and beloved philanthropist to many South Florida charities, has died at the age of 85. The mother of four boys, she passed away Tuesday from pneumonia complications at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, surrounded by her family.

Executive Producer Lou Spisto today announced the complete cast and creative team for Jane Austen's Emma - A Musical Romantic Comedy. The musical, with book, music and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Paul Gordon and direction by Tony Award nominee Jeff Calhoun, will run in the Old Globe Theatre Jan. 15 - Feb. 27. Lee Daniels to Direct ANNA IN THE TROPICS Film

Lee Daniels, who's most well known for directing PRECIOUS, has just signed on to develop and to direct ANNA IN THE TROPICS, a film adaptation of Nilo Cruz's Pulitzer and Steinberg Prize-winning play, reports the Hollywood Reporter. Cruz is on board to help develop the script as well.
