Westcoast Black Theatre Troupes's Black Nativity A Must See Sarasota Holiday Tradition

Yale Repertory Theatre will present the world premiere of Good Faith: Four Chats about Race and the New Haven Fire Department by Karen Hartman, directed by Kenny Leon, February 1-23, 2019 at Yale Repertory Theatre (1120 Chapel Street). Opening Night is Thursday, February 7.

The oldest son from the First Family of jazz, Branford Marsalis has stayed the course, refining and expanding both his talents and horizons. While classical music is a growing portion of his universe, he has toured with Sting, collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby, served as Musical Director of The Tonight Show and hosted NPR's Jazz Set. He returns to Stage One with his jazz quartet, featuring saxophonist Marsalis with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

HBO salutes Ailey at 60 with a social media video series to launch during Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 60th Anniversary New York City Center season November 28 - December 30. This tribute video series will introduce new audiences to the Ailey legacy through moving commentary from music, film, and TV stars - Jussie Smollett, Vanessa Williams, Jillian Hervey, and Black Thought - who share how Ailey has inspired their artistry, impacted American culture, and continues to reach people of all ages backgrounds around the globe.

American actress Johnetta Eula'Mae Ackles makes her professional stage debut in Martin McDonagh's A Very Very Very Dark Matter at the Bridge Theatre, playing the captive Congolese woman who supplies writer Hans Christian Andersen with all his stories. 

Last night, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 60th Anniversary holiday season at New York City Center kicked off with a star-studded Opening Night Gala Benefit performance and party led by Artistic Director Robert Battle, with iconic film stars Angela Bassett and Cicely Tyson as honorary chairs. Prudential Financial received the Ailey Legacy Honor for their generous support and commitment to Ailey, especially its education and community programs. The award was presented by Battle and Christopher Taylor, an alumnus of the inaugural AileyCamp Newark (2011) and a current scholarship student at The Ailey School, and accepted by Lata Reddy, Senior Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion and Impact at Prudential Financial.

As a centerpiece to its yearlong Ailey Ascending 60th Anniversary celebration and a kickoff to its five-week holiday season, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will host a star-studded gala benefit on Today, November 28th at 7pm, complete with a performance for the ages at New York City Center and dinner-party at the New York Hilton Midtown Grand Ballroom. The gala honors Prudential Financial for its generous support and commitment to Ailey for over three decades, especially its educational and community programs.  The Honorary Chairs for the evening are screen icons Angela Bassett and Cicely Tyson. Bassett, a Golden Globe Award winner, stars in the hit television series 9-1-1, and was most recently featured in the 2018 blockbusters Black Panther and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Tyson - known for a myriad of roles across television and film, including Roots, Fried Green Tomatoes, and most recently How to Get Away With Murder - has received three Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and on November 18th made history as the first black woman to receive an Honorary Academy Award.

The black-tie awards gala returns to the NOVO by Microsoft in L.A. Live on Saturday, February 16, 2019.

Honoring one of the world's most revered artists, The Music Center celebrated Joni Mitchell on November 6 and 7, 2018, with two all-star concerts - JONI 75: A Birthday Celebration Live at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion - and an exclusive gala, co-hosted with Vanity Fair and its editor Radhika Jones, which feted her 75th birthday and raised funds for The Music Center's artistic programming, specifically free and low cost programming for underserved communities. The concerts featured performances by Brandi Carlile; Glen Hansard; Emmylou Harris; Norah Jones; Chaka Khan; Diana Krall; Kris Kristofferson; Los Lobos with La Marisoul, Cesar Castro & Xochi Flores; Graham Nash; Seal; James Taylor; and Rufus Wainwright. The artists lit up the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage performing Mitchell's songs, which spanned all stages of her career. Co-musical directors Brain Blade and Jon Cowherd provided the evenings' musical arrangements.

Both films received wide critical acclaim and broke box office records this year. Black Panther became a cultural phenomenon that has broken boundaries and created a movement, gracing the cover of Time Magazine. Black Panther had the highest grossing non-sequel opening weekend of all time, showing that diversity and representation in front of and behind the camera can equal global box-office success. Incredibles 2 marked the biggest opening weekend in history for an animated film, grossing more than $1.2 billion globally to date and garnering widespread critical acclaim. Two-time Oscar winner writer/director Brad Bird's follow up to 2004's Oscar-winning The Incredibles expands upon the original's daring concept of a family of Supers who struggle against society's fickle embrace while tasked with stopping a devious plot to undermine the public's belief and faith in government and national security. Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) this time takes center stage as the family's secret weapon, while Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) stays home to care for the children, who display increasingly curious powers of their own.

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, EON Productions today announced they have hired film, television, and theater producer, Patrick Daly, as Overseeing Consultant, in charge of production and development across all theatrical projects. Independent of his work with EON Productions, Daly will continue to run the company he launched last year, Caledonia Productions, in producing and developing its own upcoming slate of stage and screen projects.   

National Geographic's upcoming documentary, 'The Flood,' will be narrated by Angela Bassett, according to Variety. The documentary special is about animals living in the heart of Africa's Okavango Delta.
