On the evening of June 22, I would be doing the third performance of my Don McLean Tribute show at the Metropolitan Room, but I had heard enough buzz about Los Angeles-based, former New Yorker Joanne Tatham that I wanted to catch the last staging of her show Soundtrack, New York: Music from Movies Made in Manhattan at the same venue that afternoon. Hey, a cabaret reviewer's work is never done. Besides, with my gig hours away, I felt my mental state would be best served catching someone else's show rather than climbing the walls thinking about my own. Overall, experiencing Ms. Tatham's performance turned out to be a very good use of my pre-show time.
Chris Botti returns to the Blue Note with his band this Monday for his annual 3-week residency including New Year's Eve. This year's lineup features Chris Botti (trumpet), Billy Kilson (drums), Billy Childs(piano), Lisa Fischer (vocals), Ben Butler (guitar 12/17-26),Leonardo Amuedo (guitar 12/27-1/6), Richie Goods (bass), Andy Ezrin (keyboards), Arianna Warsaw-Fan (violin 12/17-26), andCaroline Campbell (violin 12/27-1/6). New Year's Eve will include a champagne toast, hats, noisemakers, a countdown and balloon drop.

On October 4 at 7 PM, world-renowned, classically trained German cabaret singer and Broadway star Ute Lemper will debut a new, original song cycle inspired by the love poems of 20th century Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). Conceived and composed by Lemper herself in collaboration with Marcelo Nisinman, Ute Lemper Sings Pablo Neruda will continue at Joe's Pub throughout the month of October with dates on October 4, 5, 6, 30 and 31. Joining Lemper for the run at Joe's Pub are Tito Castro and JP Jofre on Bandoneon, John Benthal on Guitar, Steve Millhouse on Bass and Andy Ezrin on Piano.

This year, Botti is bringing a new band that features drummer Billy Kilson, guitarist Mark Whitfield, pianist Billy Childs, keyboardist Andy Ezrin, bassist Carlos Henriquez, vocalist Lisa Fischer, and violinists Caroline Campbell and Chee-Yun. Botti's accessible style, charm, and impressive backing band have kept him at the top of the contemporary jazz world for years. With a warm, effortless tone on the trumpet, Botti seamlessly weaves songs from the pop, jazz, classical and contemporary genres into each set. His Blue Note runs have been star-studded affairs over the last few years, boasting guest artists like John Mayer and Sting, and this year's series will be no different. As an artist who plays mostly concert halls all over the world, playing for three weeks at such an intimate club is a treat for Botti, who calls the Blue Note his favorite stop of the year.
