The residents of Flint and Ann Arbor, Michigan were treated to a very special event because of the University Musical Society (UMS): Yo-Yo Ma visited as part the performer's two-year journey to perform Six Suites for Solo Cello as a catalyst for social action and it marks the first time Ma extended the model beyond the Bach Project to a broader audience. Ma's visit was two-days filled of activities including a talk by him in the University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium on 'Culture, Understanding, and Survival,' as well as a Day of Action in Flint, Michigan with the theme, 'Flint Voices: Culture, Community, and Resilience.' At the Day of Action, Ma worked with community partners to transform lives and forge both a more connected world and a healthy and vibrant local community with the goal of the session to find new opportunities for collaborations across Flint's cultural communities and organizations. The strategy session was followed up by a community cultural show that was a celebration of Flint's vitality, diversity, and artistry. Red Bull Arts Detroit will present its first artist residency exhibition of the year will feature new artworks created by Miatta Kawinzi, Tiff Massey, and Patrick Quarm during the artists' three-month long, live-in residency. The exhibition will be open to the public from April 12–June 2, 2019, with an opening reception held on today, April 12 from 6-9pm.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announces that violinist Gabriela Pe a-Kim has been selected for the LA Phil Resident Fellows program. The program was launched during the 2018/19 season as a centerpiece initiative of the LA Phil's Centennial, with the purpose of creating a pathway towards a more diverse and inclusive orchestra of tomorrow. The fellowship is an excellence-based training program for superb early-career symphonic musicians representing or serving historically underrepresented populations. Its goal is to prepare these musicians to compete for, and win, positions in major professional orchestras.
The International Contemporary Ensemble, 'America's foremost new-music group' (Alex Ross), performs Tyshawn Sorey'sPerle Noire: Meditations for Josephine featuring star soprano Julia Bullock on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 10pm at Oberon, the American Repertory Theater's club venue. Perle Noire: Meditations for Josephine honors the brilliance, daring, courage, and tragedies of Josephine Baker in a production conceived by Peter Sellars with original music by Tyshawn Sorey and texts by Claudia Rankine, both MacArthur Fellows.
The Drama League has announced the twelve stage directors who have been selected as the 2019 Directing Fellows of The Drama League Directors Project: NJ Agwuna, Sharifa Elkady, Raz Golden, Chika Ike, Rebecca Marzalek-Kelly, Ismael Lara, Jr., Amanda McRaven, Lindsey Hope Pearlman, Ben Randle, Tai Thompson, Gabriel Torres, and Sophia Watt. The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) announces the five awardees of the inaugural NALAC Pod grants - a new engagement prototype of the NALAC Fund for the Arts program to mobilize broadly and organize deeply. Deployment of the NALAC Pods will take place in geographically and culturally diverse communities with various Latinx population densities.
Author Brendan Kiely and a cast of youth and professional actors will be presenting a table read of All American Boys: Off The Page Education's play adaptation of Kiely's book about the violent arrest of a black teenager, and the white teenager who witnesses the crime. JACK & is a theatrical performance considering reentry into society after prison, featuring actor Cornell Alston with text and design from artist Christopher Myers. The Cotillion, a companion piece to JACK &, is a multi-channel audio and video installation in Live Arts lobby, and a post-show on-stage experience exploring ceremonial entrances into society, such as debutante balls and rituals that welcome ancestors back into communities.
