Yesterday, August 8, Grammy-winning country music star Larry Gatlin took the stage of the Nederlander Theatre to join the cast of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET in a special performance of the song 'Johnny Cash is Dead and His House Burned Down,' a song written in tribute to Cash who was a friend of Gatlin's. In addition, Gatlin wrote songs that were recorded by Cash, Elvis Presley, and Carl Perkins, three of the members of the real Million Dollar Quartet. Floyd Mutrux, head of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET co-production company American Pop Anthology, has plans to bring more musicals based on rock groups to Broadway, Variety reports. Of his plans, Mutrux says, 'With American Pop Anthology, I've written a series of stories about the people who made the music that changed the culture of our country from the 1950s to 1980s, which ended with MTV...MTV took all the mystery out of rock 'n' roll. The record companies spent the money making videos and they stopped putting money into groups touring.'
Variety reports today that the biographical musical about composer Florence Greenberg by Million Dollar Quartet producer and book writer Floyd Mutrux is being prepped for a 2011 Broadway opening. Entitled Baby, It's You, the musical is aiming to open in the winter of 2011, co- directed by Mutrux and Sheldon Epps. Mutrux and Epps also collaborated on the Pasadena Playhouse production in November of 2009. The show premiered at the Coast Playhouse in Los Angeles prior to its Pasadena run.
