Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture and CUNY Dance Initiative Present MAWU Dance

As part of the CUNY Dance Initiative, the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture presents the premiere of MAWU Dance's 'Journey into House' for the Company's performance on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 7:30pm in the Repertory Theater of Hostos Community College, located at 450 Grand Concourse in the Bronx. The performance will be followed by a brief Q&A, and then an after concert party, featuring the sounds of DJ Sabine Blaizin, in the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos.

One of the neat things about writing a column for Broadway World is that you get a chance to interview some folks whose work you've been enjoying and admiring for many years. One of today's subjects first came on my radar way back in 1980 with the Broadway revival of West Side Story. Debbie Allen played Anita in that production and her Her performance deservedly garnered her a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award. A few years later she wowed me again playing the lead role in Sweet Charity, which resulted in yet another Tony Award nomination.

 Today, Dance Consortium, a group of 17 large scale venues located across the UK, announces full details of its 40th tour, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba's UK Tour 2017. Last seen in the UK in 2012, Cuba's vibrant flagship contemporary dance company will present an exciting programme choreographed by some of today's most sought-after choreographic names. The 2017 UK tour opens at Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham on 14 February and concludes at Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury on 18 March.

The NY Dance and Performance Awards, The Bessies, New York City's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, announced the complete list of the 2015-16 season award recipients tonight at the 32nd Annual Bessie Awards ceremony. Dance Theatre of Harlem Returns to the Auditorium Theatre

The acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) gives three performances at the Auditorium Theatre on November 18, 19, and 20 with a program that includes System, a major new work by choreographer Francesca Harper. The work is supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts, and is inspired by the current social, political, and economic climate in the United States.System was choreographed in collaboration with Dance Theatre of Harlem dancers who used their own experiences as people of color for inspiration.  DTH Artistic Director Virginia Johnson told the Washington Post that System "addresses social justice issues in the Black Lives Matter era" and is "a very contemporary piece, but also very beautiful and uplifting.' A live string quartet performs composer John Adams' original music for the piece.
