Verb Ballets of Cleveland, Ohio prepares to travel to Cuba on March 3, 2018 to join forces with ProDanza of Havana in an international collaboration to form the Cleveland Havana Ballet. The Cleveland Havana Ballet will debut in Cuba with a groundbreaking partnership supported through the Cleveland Foundation's Creative Fusion initiative. This significant cultural collaboration will encompass performances in Havana, Cuba by the combined companies in March led by Verb Ballets' Producing Artistic Director, Dr. Margaret Carlson and ProDanza under the direction Laura Alonso.

For two weeks this spring, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will present Artes de Cuba: From the Island to the World, a festival celebrating the artistic richness that has emerged from this island archipelago in the sun. This unprecedented gathering of Cuban and Cuban American artists represents some of the world's greatest from the island and the Diaspora. Curated by the same Kennedy Center team responsible for past international festivals, including the recent IRELAND 100, IBERIAN SUITE, China, ARABESQUE, and maximum INDIA, Artes de Cuba highlights the profound artistic breadth and cultural influence of the island nation.
Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC) performs at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in the Ted Shawn Theatre, August 16-20, representing the work of one of the seminal choreographers of the 20th century. Since Brown's passing this past March, witnessing TBDC in an evening-length program is an increasingly rare experience. Echoing Brown's choreographic innovation, timeless aesthetic, and 1960s postmodern approach to dance making, TBDC will perform a version of Opal Loop (1980) prepared especially for Jacob's Pillow, featuring former dancers of the company and an original cast member. Acknowledging Brown's more recent choreography, TBDC will also perform Groove and Countermove (2000) and L'Amour au théâtre (2009). As the company ventures into a new era, viewing Brown's work in a proscenium venue “feel[s] increasingly essential” (The New Yorker).
The Ruth Page Center for the Arts proudly announces Chicago Y Cuba: 2017 - The International Dance Experience, a culminating product of the landmark exchange program between The Ruth Page School of Dance (RPSD) and Cuba's National School of Ballet (NSB), the country's premier ballet school, largest of its kind in the world and the very same school that RPSD Director Victor Alexander received his training. Ballet Concerto School in Miami, FL will close after 55 years. One of the oldest and arguably one of the highest quality classical ballet schools in the region, Ballet Concerto opened its doors in 1961 and subsequently Miami's first professional ballet company, Ballet Concerto Company, in 1964. The school produced some recognizable names, most notably Fernando Bujones, and the company set a precedent for classical ballet in the area by bringing the most extraordinary ballet artists of the twentieth century to South Florida for the first time. Guest artists included Rudolph Nureyev, Carla Fracci, Cynthia Gregory, Natalia Makarova, Ivan Nagy, Gelsey Kirkland, and Alexander Gudonov to name a few. Ballet Concerto will be remembered as a key player in the development of arts and culture in South Florida, especially within the Hispanic community. Artistic Directors Sonia Diaz and Martha del Pino, who defected from Ballet Nacional de Cuba, where they danced alongside Alicia Alonso and under the direction of Fernando Alonso, implemented and maintained the rigorous classical curriculum that Cuban ballet has since become known for. There is no question of the void left by the closing of this Miami establishment, mostly in the heart of the three generations, and thousands of students who studied and danced at Ballet Concerto and in the memory of those who witnessed the evolution of the cultural arts in Miami between the 1960's and 1980's, when the school and company were at its peak.

Instead of the usual gala fare -- bits of firecracker variations and pieces of ballet classics -- Sergei Danilian's 'Ardani 25 Dance Gala' at New York City Center, August 19 and 20, is classic Danilian. The intrepid impresario, who has never side-stepped risk, will celebrate Ardani Artists's quarter century of producing in the United States and abroad with a trio of U.S. premieres, two by young, unknown, but up-and-coming Russian choreographers, and one by American Ballet Theatre principal Marcelo Gomes.
