DON GRIGWARE Picks The BEST PRODUCTIONS AND PERFORMANCES in LOS ANGELES THEATRE for 2015

There are undoubtedly other productions worthy of merit in 2015 which I did not cover. This list is based only on what I saw and reviewed. (alphabetical listings; Equity, Equity-waiver & Non-Equity productions are mixed) (artists performing outside LA may be included in performance categories) No set, costume, or technical awards. I leave that to the bigger awards and to the expertise of those who really know those fields inside out.

Joey Barreiro to Lead Disney's NEWSIES at Marcus Center This Winter

Casting has been announced for the Milwaukee engagement of Disney's NEWSIES. The Tony Award-winning production will begin performances at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, January 5 for a limited engagement through Sunday, January 10.

NEWSIES National Tour Coming to the Fabulous Fox in January

Casting has been announced for the St. Louis engagement of Disney's NEWSIES.   The Tony Award-winning production will begin performances at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Tuesday, January 19 for a limited engagement through Sunday, January 31. 

Photographer Catherine Opie to Debut Solo Exhibition at Lehmann Maupin, 1/14

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to present the gallery's debut solo exhibition for Los Angeles-based photographer Catherine Opie. For the occasion, two concurrent exhibitions will be on view at the gallery's Chelsea and Lower East Side locations, featuring new work by Opie that underscores her on-going dialogue with the history of photography and constructs of identity, both integral aspects of her practice. The artist will be present for opening receptions at both galleries on Thursday, January 14 from 6-8PM.

Maureen Sherbondy Releases Eighth Poetry Book

North Carolina writer Maureen Sherbondy has published her eighth book of poetry, 'The Art of Departure.' Sherbondy, a Raleigh, North Carolina fiction writer and poet, is a previous winner of the North Carolina Poetry Council's 2013 Oscar Arnold Young Award for North Carolina's Best Book for The Year of Dead Fathers (Spring Garden Press, Greensboro, NC). Sherbondy's stories have appeared in Stone Canoe, the North Carolina Literary Review, Southeast Review, and the Sierra Nevada College Review. She is a previous winner of the Piccolo Spoleto Fiction Open, as well as a finalist in Southeast Review's Best Short-Short Story Contest. Her previous poetry collection, Praying at Coffee Shops, won first place in the poetry category of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Her first poetry collection, After the Fairy Tale, was published in 2007 (Main Street Rag). Weary Blues was released by Big Table Publishing in 2010. Jose Llana, Ann Harada, Ali Ewoldt, and More Lead CHANGING THE STATS: ASIAN AMERICANS ON BROADWAY

BroadwayWorld has learned that Jose Llana (THE KING AND I), Ann Harada (AVENUE Q), Ali Ewoldt (THE KING AND I), and more will lead "Changing the Stats: Asian Americans on Broadway." The show will be a concert of excerpts from dream roles not traditionally cast with Asian American actors on Monday, November 2 at The Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space.

World Premiere Drama CAGED to Open Next Month at Theatre Banshee

Mean Machine Productions and Georganne Aldrich Heller in association with Theatre Banshee have announced the world premiere production of a new drama, CAGED by Dermot Davis. Featuring Elizabeth Lande and Johnny O'Callaghan and directed by Tim Byron Owen, CAGED will play one preview on October 22 at 8pm, with an opening set for Today, October 23 at 8pm. The engagement will run through November 22 only at Theatre Banshee in Burbank.

World Premiere Drama CAGED Begins Tonight at Theatre Banshee

Mean Machine Productions and Georganne Aldrich Heller in association with Theatre Banshee have announced the world premiere production of a new drama, CAGED by Dermot Davis. Featuring Elizabeth Lande and Johnny O'Callaghan and directed by Tim Byron Owen, CAGED will play one preview tonight, October 22 at 8pm, with an opening set for Friday, October 23 at 8pm. The engagement will run through November 22 only at Theatre Banshee in Burbank.

Staged Readings of LOVES OF PICASSO Set for MOMA's Celeste Bartos Theater Today

Veteran producer Pat Addiss (Buyer and Cellar, Love Letters) and Georganne Aldrich Heller (Howie the Rookie-Bam, Silent, Forgotten) president of Irish Theatre & Film Production (georgannealdricheller.com) have announced that they will join forces in presenting two invitation only, special staged readings of 'Loves of Picasso' written and directed by Terry D' Alfonso. The two readings will be held on October 9th at 2PM and 5pm at MOMA to coincide with museum's opening of the largest ever Picasso sculpture exhibit that same week. The script is based on the private life of Picasso, the women he loved and will include video installations conceived by Terry D' Alfonso.

Marvel Universe LIVE! Heads to Chicagoland This Month

Marvel Universe LIVE! will be flying in to Chicago from today, Sept. 10 to Sept. 13 at the United Center and Sept. 18 to Sept 20 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., for total of 15 performances in Chicagoland. Tickets for Marvel Universe LIVE! are on sale now.

STAGE TUBE: Original Crutchie Andrew Keenan-Bolger Finally Gets to Sing Added NEWSIES Song!

On August 24, 2014, NEWISES closed on Broadway. Exactly one year later, cast members from the hit Broadway musical came together on the stage of 54 Below to reminisce. In the lineup were songs of various music styles, stories and memories of their time with the show. Below, watch as Andrew Keenan-Bolger, the original Crutchie, performs 'Letter from the Refuge'- a song that wasn't added to the show until the launch of the national tour.
