BWW Review: In Birdland Return, Anita Gillette's Songs & Anecdotes Are Charming & Delightful in SO, AS I WAS SAYING . . .
by Alix Cohen
- Sep 30, 2015
Ninety percent of the way into her ebullient show last night at Birdland, So, As I Was Saying, Anita Gillette quotes a 1977 review of her performance in Neil Simon's Chapter Two that stated the warmth she exudes could melt glaciers. (The artist wasn't bragging, but was referring to her then difficulty in finding any glaciers, i.e., men to melt.) The description applies today.
A packed audience comprised both of devoted civilian fans and theatrical luminaries cheered on the latest iteration of Gillette's dramatized life. Once again directed by Barry Kleinbort with musically directed by Paul Greenwood (who also appealingly sings duets), with Ritt Henn on bass and John Redsecker on drums, the show is as sincere and bubbly as the lady herself.

BWW Reviews: THE GRINCH Stage Musical Offers Fun, Kid-Friendly Theatrics
by Michael L. Quintos
- Dec 12, 2014
I'd have to be, well... a mean ol' Grinch to say anything remotely negative about the new non-equity touring stage production of DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL, so I'll try my best to keep it to a minimum. Honestly though, it's really not that hard, actually, because---surprise---the show, for the most part, is an honest-to-goodness adorable little musical with lots of kid-friendly comedy and a feel-good holiday message that really softens even the hardest of cynics. And yes, even I myself found my heart growing three sizes during the course of the show's smile-inducing opening night performance at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts (it continues here for a brief run through December 14). Sure, the show isn't exactly the pinnacle of musical theater excellence, nor does it even attempt to be. But what it lacks in roof-raising, show-stopping splendor, it makes up for ten-fold in pure pluck---the kind that kids, especially, will eat right up like candy.

Even with its 'endless summer' weather, Orange County certainly embraces the spirit of the holidays. This year, audiences can look forward to four unique and fun-filled seasonal shows at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The holiday concert season at the Center kicks off with beloved American singer/songwriter Judy Collins in her show, Holidays and Hits (December 6) performing an array of holiday classics as well as her inspiring interpretations of folk standards. This is followed by the whimsical and critically acclaimed show DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL (December 10 - 14). The enchanting and ever popular Celtic Woman returns with the spirited show Home for Christmas - The Symphony Tour (December 15), and, finally, the popular Fiesta Navidad with Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano (December 23) rounds out the holiday programming with an evening of traditional Mexican songs and dance.
