BWW Review: AMADEUS, Olivier Theatre

Greeted by rapturous reviews in 2016, Peter Shaffer's acclaimed production of Amadeus makes a triumphant return to the National Theatre this week. The enthralling story of a fictional confessional from an Italian musician called Antonio Salieri, as he recalls his obsessional jealousy and subsequent efforts to destroy Amadeus Mozart told through extended flashbacks, has been a success since its debut in 1979. Under Michael Longhurst's careful direction, this version is an extraordinary piece of theatre.

Photo Flash: Inside Rehearsals for AMADEUS at the National Theatre

Michael Longhurst's acclaimed production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus returns to the Olivier theatre this January following a sell-out run of performances last year. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy it. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music and, ultimately, with God.

BWW Review: AGAINST, Almeida Theatre

The incident tent, the police tape: a sickeningly familiar sight, made fresh yet again by the tragic events of this week. But that very familiarity, and the tendency of one event to be swiftly superseded by another in the public consciousness, is a major issue tackled by Christopher Shinn's ambitious new epic. What is at the root of violence, and if we never stop to address that, how can humanity ever hope for a better future?

BWW Review: ANATOMY OF A SUICIDE, Royal Court

'My mother says you're tragedy personified,' reports a precocious child to Carol, who recently attempted suicide. It's typical of Alice Birch's harrowing new play, which wrings blistering humour as well as despair from its accomplished portrait of women in pain and their disconnect from those around them.

BWW Review: TORN, Royal Court Theatre, 13 September 2016

Family is the ideal, the necessity, the burden and the war zone of Nathaniel Martello-White's intricate new piece, alternately elusive and confrontational. It's group therapy - Ultz provides the community hall plastic chairs and tea table - with no safeguards, where familial secrets are not just teased out but wrenched, kicking and screaming, to the surface.

BWW Review: TIPPING THE VELVET, Lyric Hammersmith, September 28 2015

'Tipping The Velvet' brings back the collaboration between playwright Laura Wade and director Lyndsey Turner. Last seen with the successful 'Posh', this is clearly a duo to be reckoned with and their adaptation of Sarah Waters' popular novel is playfully re-imagined with a masterful design.

Full Cast Announced for Stage Adaptation of TIPPING THE VELVET

Kirsty Besterman, David Cardy, Amanda Hadingue, Adelle Leonce and Andy Rush will join the previously announced Sally Messham and Laura Rogers in Laura Wade's new adaptation of Sarah Waters' bestselling novel, Tipping the Velvet, directed by Lyndsey Turner. They will be supported by a young ensemble. Tipping the Velvet will open at the Lyric Hammersmith on 28 September 2015, with previews from 18 September.
