'An American in London: Whistler and the Thames,' opening May 3 at the Smithsonian's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, is the first major exhibition ever devoted to American artist James McNeill Whistler's early period in London, and it is the largest U.S. display of his work in almost 20 years. The exhibition showcases changing views of the capital city's iconic riverbanks and waterways, revealing how Whistler emerged as one of the most innovative and original artists of the 19th century while London evolved into a modern city.

California Shakespeare Theater today announced details for the company's 19th annual fundraising bash, Raise the Roof, to be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 6pm at the Four Seasons San Francisco. The evening, celebrating the company's 40th anniversary and featuring honorary chairperson Annette Bening, who appeared in several Cal Shakes productions in the early years of the company, will support Cal Shakes' work on stage, in classrooms, and with Bay Area communities.

Aurora Theatre Company presents the Bay Area Premiere of WITTENBERG, David Davalos' audacious comedy about reason versus faith. Josh Costello (San Francisco Playhouse, Marin Theatre Company, Impact Theatre) directs this smarty-pants celebration of history, language, academia, and religion, featuring Dan Hiatt (The Arsonists), Elizabeth Carter (Trouble in Mind), Jeremy Kahn, and Michael Stevenson. Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) presents an unprecedented pairing of productions that will illuminate the work of composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim: Gypsy (CST's Courtyard Theater, February 6-March 23) and Road Show (Upstairs at Chicago Shakespeare, March 13-May 4), both directed by CST Associate Artistic Director Gary Griffin. With Sondheim's characteristic depth and musicality, Gypsy and Road Show each explore the ambitious pursuit of the American Dream during the defining period in our nation's history between the two world wars. WaterTower Theatre's 2014 Spotlight Gala will be held tonight, February 22, 2014 at 7 pm. The Gala is chaired by Barbara Daseke. The committee chairs are April Bosworth, Live and Silent Auction Chair; Derek Blount, Underwriting Chair and Corky Pledger, Cuisine Chair. The theme for this year's Gala is 'What the World Needs Now: A Tribute to Burt Bacharach.' Singer/Actress Liz Mikel will perform an evening of well-known Bacharach hits along with some very 'special friends.'
