The NY Philharmonic Begins Their Winter U.S. Tour 2009

The Philharmonic begins the Winter U.S. Tour 2009 with performances in Atlanta and West Palm Beach led by Lorin Maazel, who is making his final tour with the Orchestra as Music Director. The trip, which will take the musicians to 10 cities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and will include 13 concerts, marks the first American tour under the aegis of Credit Suisse, the Global Sponsor of the New York Philharmonic.

Robyn Nevin AM and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Arvo Volmer, will present a stirring tribute to President-elect Barack Obama in New York City on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 8PM at Carnegie Hall - following the inauguration of the 44th President earlier that day. The performance will be a feature of the Australia Plays Broadway concert being presented as part of G?Day USA: Australia Week 2009. Widely regarded as the first lady of the Australian stage, Robyn Nevin will deliver the spoken word component of Aaron Copland?s Lincoln Portrait, to be performed by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Arvo Volmer. Copland?s emotionally charged composition features extracts from President Abraham Lincoln?s letters and speeches, most notably the Gettysburg Address. One of the most quoted speeches in United States history, the Gettysburg Address was delivered by Lincoln in 1863 at the dedication of the Soldiers? National Cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. With the Civil War in progress, the two-minute speech invoked the principles of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence.

The festival opens with a program of works by Bernstein, Barber and Rachmaninov on Thursday, October 30, 2008, and concludes with the Atlanta debut of a concert-staged production of John Adams' Dr. Atomic on Sunday, November 23, 2008.

On Thursday August 8th Camp Broadway, Broadway's Original Summer Camp, hosts legendary composer Charles Strouse for a Masterclass on Annie and Bye, Bye Birdie. Kids ages 6 - 10 are able to participate for Annie and kids ages 10 - 16 for Bye Bye Birdie. The class will take place at Chelsea Studios (151 W 26th Street).
