TNT Orders New Seasons of 'The Closer,' 'Rizzoli,' 'Isles'

TNT has ordered new seasons of three of the network's hit series. The Closer, which continues to rank as ad-supported cable's #1 series of all time, will return for its seventh season. Rizzoli & Isles, which currently ranks as cable's #1 new series for the year-to-date, will return for a second season. Leverage, which is performing exceptionally well in its new Sunday timeslot, will be back for a fourth season. TNT has ordered 15 episodes each of The Closer and Leverage, along with 13 episodes of Rizzoli & Isles, with all three slated to start their new seasons in 2011.

FELA! to be Honored by New York City 7/29

The cast and crew of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Fela!, based on the life and music of groundbreaking African composer, performer and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, will be honored by New York City Council Members Jimmy Van Bramer and Julissa Ferreras on the Steps of City Hall on Thursday, July 29.

The Savannah Disputation Premieres at Olney July 28 - Aug. 22

The Savannah Disputation, written by Evan Smith, plays the Mainstage July 28 through August 22. Tickets are $26 to $54, with discounts available to groups, seniors, military, and students. In addition, Olney offers several special performances that include sign interpretation, audio description, and post-show discussions.

2010 Fall for Dance Festival Comes To City Center, Runs 9/28-10/9

New York City Center's seventh annual Fall for Dance Festival, running September 28 - October 9, will showcase 20 national and international companies and choreographers. With ticket prices remaining at $10 for all seats, a night of dance is more affordable than a night at the movies. The festival will include world and U.S. premieres, and will feature several companies making their first U.S. appearances.

Sideshow Theatre Presents THEORIES OF THE SUN, Opens 9/9

Sideshow Theatre Company kicks off its 2010-2011 season with the MidwestPremiere of Kathleen Akerley's critically acclaimed Theories of the Sun. Part mystery and part sciencefiction, this 'lyrical, melancholy new drama' (Washington Post) has twists and turns that will keepaudiences guessing until the very end.

Synthesized Music on Bway - Can You Tell the Difference?

As BroadwayWorld has previously reported, the producers of West Side Story on Broadway are planning to replace half of its string section with a synthesizer. This has sparked much debate, with opponents claiming that a synthesized sound alters the theater-going experience.

ACT Continues Season With THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES 6/18-7/18

ACT's 2010 Mainstage season continues with a savagely funny new comedy, The Female of the Species by Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith, June 18-July 18, 2010. This Seattle premiere is loosely based on a real-life incident when feminist icon, author, and professor Germaine Greer was attacked and held hostage in her home in the British countryside by a college co-ed obsessed with the famous writer.

Royal & Derngate Closes FLATHAMPTON, 7/17

As part of the theatre's Hometown season, Royal & Derngate is transforming the whole of the Derngate auditorium into a giant children's playmat for a fantastic interactive show for children and families to enjoy together. Flathampton runs from Friday 9 to Saturday 17 July.

RIALTO CHATTER: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith to Lead STREETCAR on Broadway?

According to Michael Riedel this morning, Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith may be leading a production of Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway next year as Stanley and Stella, respectively. Reportedly, the pair have been approached by producers and are considering the possibility. Emily Mann will direct the production, which will be produced by Stephen Byrd. RIALTO CHATTER: Patti LaBelle to Join FELA! on Broadway in September?

Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post this morning that songbird Patti LaBelle will be joining the Broadway cast of FELA! in September as Fela's mother. She will be filling in for Lillias White, who has concert obligations in Australia that month.

New York State and City of New York to Honor Tito Puente Today 7/15

New York State Senate President Malcolm A. Smith, Assemblywoman Carmen E. Arroyo and William Ferro of 1800-Cantaso will join Tito Puente, Jr. in a special ceremony and press conference honoring Latin music king and legend Tito Puente tomorrow, Thursday, July 15 at 4:00 PM at 424 W. 33rd St., Suite 440 in Manhattan, NY. They will be announcing a major tribute concert for Tito Puente featuring some of the nation's best performers.

Fela's Son Sees FELA!; Musical to be Produced in Lagos

The New York Times reports that Femi Kuti, son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, saw FELA! while in New York on Sunday. Previously, Kuti would not see the production unless it was brought to Lagos, where his father originally built the nightclub. On Saturday, over a World Cup viewing with FELA! co-conceiver and producer Stephen Hendel, Kuti was promised the show will see a production in Lagos. Said Hendel: 'We're going to keep our word.'

TNT's 'Rizzoli & Isles' is Cable's #1 Commercial-Supported Series Launch of All Time

Monday night's premiere of TNT's new original series Rizzoli & Isles now claims the record as cable's #1 commercial-supported series launch of all time, with 7.6 million viewers. The series, starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, raced out of the starting gate after an equally strong performance for the sixth-season premiere of The Closer, which delivered 7.7 million viewers, up 7% over its fifth-season premiere on June 8, 2009. Both premieres also rank as ad-supported cable's top series telecasts for the year-to-date among viewers and households.

TNT's THE CLOSER Returns For Sixth Season 7/12

A new multi-million-dollar headquarters and an internal political struggle over who will become the next police chief add a whole new set of challenges for Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson as TNT presents the sixth season of ad-supported cable's #1 series of all time - THE CLOSER. Golden Globe(R) winner and four-time Emmy(R) nominee Kyra Sedgwick returns as Johnson, who heads up the LAPD's Major Crimes Division.

Ngaujah, Ivory, Marshall et al. to Star in London FELA!

Casting for the London production of FELA! has been announced, Grace Notes reports. As previously reported on BroadwayWorld, the production will star Sahr Ngaujah, who was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway production, as Nigerian composer and activist Fela Kuti. The production will also star Paulette Ivory and Melanie Marshall.

Penn Shakes. Fest Closes THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD, 7/3

The Irish play that led to riots in the streets of Dublin when it debuted 103 years ago and became a comic masterpiece, The Playboy of the Western World, opens the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival's 19th season. With previews June 16 and 17, the play opens June 18 in the Schubert Theatre and continues through July 3.
