From Ritchie Valens to Carlos Santana to Selena, the musical contributions of U.S. Latinos from the 1940s to present day will be explored in the free exhibition American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music opening at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts on April 20. Created by EMP Museum, the University of Washington, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, its national tour and its related programs are made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund. Accompanying the exhibition will be a display of materials on Latino music and dance from the earliest days of recorded sound to the 1940s from The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts collections. A series of programs and screenings are scheduled at The Library throughout May and June. American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music will be on display in the Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery from April 20, 2013 thru July 13, 2013 at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center at 40 Lincoln Center Plaza. Admission is free.

The Juilliard School today announced a $10 million gift that completes the endowment of the School's new four-year masters-level graduate program in Drama. The gift supports increased instructional costs and new faculty, and provides full scholarships plus stipends for actors in their final and fourth year of the master of fine arts program in Drama. Juilliard's Board Chairman and his wife, Bruce and Suzie Kovner initiated a matching challenge grant of up to $5 million to endow Juilliard Drama's MFA program, with donors John A. and Carole Moran and The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust completing that challenge.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) announced today casting for its contemporary retelling of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, staged by acclaimed British director Jonathan Munby in his Chicago debut, February 5-March 24, 2013 in CST's Courtyard Theater. The production features a celebrated company of artists that includes Jeff Award-winning Chicago actor David Darlow in the title role, Canada's Stratford Festival favorite Dion Johnstone as Marc Antony, New York stage and screen actor Jason Kolotouros as Caius Cassius and British actor John Light as Marcus Brutus. The production also welcomes the return of veteran CST actors David Lively as Ligarius/Lepidus, Barbara E. Robertson as Calphurnia and Larry Yando as Casca.
Theatre 167 will present the Manhattan Premiere of THE JACKSON HEIGHTS TRILOGY, a rotating repertory of three plays about the Queens, New York neighborhood famous for being the world's most diverse community. Created by 18 playwrights and starring a company of 37 actors playing 93 multicultural roles, the plays were conceived and will be directed by Ari Laura Kreith. The trilogy will inaugurate the newly renovated 777 Theatre, located at 777 8th Avenue at 47th Street beginning February 8th. While each of the plays has been presented individually in Queens to critical acclaim, this is the first time any of these plays will be seen in Manhattan and the first time they are being presented together in repertory, where audiences can see them individually or all in one day.
Sometimes the career you end up with is quite different from what you originally intended. Such is the case with Sue McMurtray. Although a career in show business was not one of her original intentions, McMurtray is retiring as Managing/Marketing Director at South Central Pennsylvania's famous Totem Pole Playhouse, after 28 years. Before McMurtray became a fixture at the summer theater she attended nursing school, became an x-ray technician and eventually ran the historic Penn National Inn, located nearby the Totem Pole Playhouse, between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
