Seattle Musical Theatre to Save the Stage

Seattle Musical Theatre (SMT) has received an award from the Morgan Family Foundation to rebuild the stage at their historic theatre in Magnuson Park. SMT began its campaign to 'Save the Stage' after an inspection in 2016 revealed that the temporary stage built ten years earlier was literally on its last legs. The supporting infrastructure, after years of shimming, bracing, and leveling, was beyond saving and would need to be demolished and rebuilt.

BrownBox Theatre and Sound Theatre Company to Present Encore Reading of BLACK LIKE US

To celebrate the publication of the play Black Like Us, BrownBox Theatre joins forces with Sound Theatre Company to present an 'encore' staged reading of the Gregory Award Winning Play at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute.  Black Like Us is a funny, poignant, and deeply relevant story about the bonds of family, the struggles of identity, and the far-reaching effects of one woman's decision. The play is set in Seattle's Central District neighborhood, not far from the location of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, and spans decades of change that have impacted that community.

BWW Reviews: Lyrically Haunting AND JESUS MOONWALKS THE MISSISSIPPI From STC

Sound Theatre Company has never shied away from difficult plays and now in conjunction with Brownbox Theatre they've taken on Marcus Gardley's moving civil war fable "… And Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi". To be blunt, this play is not going to be for everyone with its deeply poetic nature and complex imagery. And while certain elements of the piece I found confusing or missing the mark; I was able to come away from it with an admiration of its lyric beauty and gripping story.

BWW Reviews: PASSING STRANGE from Sidecountry Delivers the Poetic Beauty of a Rock and Roll Life

How do you put on an autobiographical show, known to be performed by its author, without that author? It's like "700 Sundays" without Billy Crystal or "Elaine Stritch at Liberty" without Elaine Stritch. Well, fledgling theater company Sidecountry Theatre has done just that with their production of "Passing Strange" by Stew and Heidi Rodewald without Stew narrating his own story. And while it's a little odd at first, narrator LeRoy Bell embraces the part and that oddness melts away as his charisma and talent takes center stage.

BLACK LIKE US to Open Annex Theatre's 2014 Season

Annex Theatre has long considered itself the research and development wing of the Seattle theater scene. Last Winter, Annex partnered with Rain City Projects (a playwright service organization founded in 1991) to present a theatrical experiment called Second Date, in which writers and directors had a chance to stage short pieces of work they were developing. One of those pairings was playwright Rachel Atkins (TPS Gregory Nominee for Outstanding Playwright, 2010) and director Tyrone Brown (Artistic Director, Brownbox Theatre). For Second Date, they revived a ten-minute 'Quickie' Rachel originally wrote for Live Girls! Theater (theme: 'exploration and discoveries') and expanded it to a twenty minute short. An hour-long version received a reading in the Live Girls! Cupcake Series later that year, directed by Jose Amador. Now Annex Theatre, in partnership with Brownbox, is proud to present the full-length, world-premiere production of Black Like Us, with Jose Amador returning as director.
