David S. Weiss

BIO

Dr. Weiss is a physician (orthopedist) in private practice in New York City, specializing in the care of professional theatrical performers.

He has served as Orthopedist for over 90 Broadway and off-Broadway theatrical productions, including The Will Rogers Follies, Guys & Dolls, Miss Saigon, Cats, The Who’s Tommy, Cabaret, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, Footloose, Riverdance on Broadway, The Music Man, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Chita Rivera – The Dancer’s Life, Grease, White Christmas, Shrek, 9 to 5, The Addams Family, Promises Promises, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, War Horse, Follies, Newsies, Once, Evita, Motown, After Midnight, Les Misérable, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Matilda, Groundhog Day, and Anastasia.
At present, he serves as Orthopedist to Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre, Avenue Q at New World Stages, Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre, The Book of Mormon at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, Matilda The Musical at the Shubert Theatre, Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre, Something Rotten at the St. James Theatre, Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Holiday Inn at Roundabout Theatre’s Studio 54, and The Front Page at the Broadhurst Theatre.
Dr. Weiss is also Orthopedist to Mark Morris Dance Group, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Parsons Dance Company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, and Ballet Hispanico. He served as the Orthopedic Consultant to The Juilliard School, working with musicians, dancers, actors, and singers, from 1988 to 2020. He served as Orthopedist for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company until 2011, when the company disbanded.
Dr. Weiss is Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine and Associate Director of the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries at NYU Langone Medical Center. Dr. Weiss is a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) and Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA), and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has served on both the IADMS and PAMA Board of Directors, and as IADMS President, Vice-President, Program Committee Chair, and webmaster. Dr. Weiss is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science and President of the Board of Directors of the Dance Research Foundation, publisher of Ballet Review, where he also serves as webmaster. He lectures frequently on dance medicine, nationally and internationally.
Dr. Weiss was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, received his BA degree summa cum laude with high honors in Biochemistry and Chemistry from Brandeis University, and received his MD degree from Yale University School of Medicine. He completed a surgical internship at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, a residency in orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital, and a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
