Adam Arkin is an American actor, director, and writer who has made a name for himself in both the theater and on television. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1956, Arkin grew up in a family of performers. His father, Alan Arkin, is a well-known actor and his mother, Barbara Dana, was a stage actress.

Arkin began his acting career in the theater, appearing in numerous productions both on and off Broadway. In 1989, he received a Tony Award nomination for his role in the play "I Hate Hamlet." He has also appeared in productions of "The Normal Heart," "The American Clock," and "The Doctor's Dilemma," among others.

Arkin's first major television role came in 1985 when he was cast as Dr. Aaron Shutt in the medical drama "Chicago Hope." He received three Emmy nominations for his work on the show, which ran until 2000. Arkin has also had recurring roles on "Northern Exposure," "The West Wing," and "Sons of Anarchy."

In addition to his work on television, Arkin has appeared in numerous films throughout his career. He made his film debut in 1977 in the movie "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming." He has since appeared in films such as "Hitch," "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later," and "The Sessions."

Arkin has also directed several episodes of television shows, including "Boston Legal," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Private Practice." He has also directed several films, including "The Principle," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014.
