To show gratitude to health care workers and their families this Thanksgiving, Working In Concert will stream the Bellissima Cast production of On Call for free.

Chicago-based Working In Concert premieres the world’s first full-length virtual opera, On Call: COVID-19 on Saturday, April 17 at 7 PM (CDT) followed by 8 PM Artist Meet-and-Greet and Sunday, April 18 at 2:30 PM (CDT) followed by 3:30 PM Artist Meet-and-Greet.

Chicago-based Working In Concert premieres the world's first full-length virtual opera, On Call: COVID-19, streaming on April 17th & 18th.  Created by composer DAVID SHENTON of Queens NY, librettist CHRISTINE STEYER of Oak Park IL, and director CARL RATNER of Kalamazoo MI, On Call is drawn from 200 articles about global healthcare workers facing the COVID-19 pandemic.   

Working In Concert, the two-year-old performing arts collaborative, has been awarded $9,200 by the Illinois Art Council to underwrite a premiere concert by Black Voices in Cabaret to launch this network of African-American performers. The concert “Healing through Song” has distinct 30-40 minute episodes that will stream on three consecutive Sundays in March: the 14th, 21st, and 28th, at 3pm.

The South Florida Symphony Orchestra has announced three performances of a groundbreaking new production of the Gershwin's great American opera Porgy and Bess.

The rarely performed 1930's American Opera, PORGY AND BESS is given a Staged Concert treatment by Director Mitchell Butel with the support of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

Before the opera premieres at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago this fall, Roulette is pleased to present selections from American composer George Lewis' Afterword: The AACM (As) Opera. Developed in collaboration with director Sean Griffin and media/theater artist Catherine Sullivan, Afterword is the aesthetic extension of Lewis' widely acclaimed book on the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, A Power Stronger Than Itself: the AACM and American Experimental Music (University of Chicago Press, 2008). Born on the South Side of Chicago and turning 50 this year, the AACM has played a major role in American experimental music, and its ardent experimentation and radical collectivist politics are the inspiration behind Lewis' first operatic venture.

In the final month of the 2013/2014 season, TSO musicians will claim the spotlight in an engaging Light Classics programme that includes the electrifying crescendo of Ravel's famous Bolero and Brahms's merry medley of German student songs. Led by RBC Resident Conductor Shalom Bard, Niccolo Paganini's Sonata per la gran viola will provide the dazzling showpiece for Principal Viola Teng Li, while Principal Oboe Sarah Jeffrey will steal the spotlight in Calla Lilies by Canadian composer Marjan Mozetich.

Right from the first few notes of the overture, whether you're familiar with the show or not, a musical theater lover's ears will register the familiar lilt of a Gershwin melody reminiscent of "Rhapsody in Blue" and cause you to settle in your seat a little more with a contended sigh. At least that's what happened to this musical theater lover as he ventured just a little outside his normal realm and into the world of opera to catch Seattle Opera's breathtaking production of "Porgy and Bess".
