BWW Review: The Origin Of Television Takes Center Stage in THE FARNSWORTH INVENTION at 1st Stage

As directed by Alex Levy, THE FARNSWORTH INVENTION is theatrically inventive and mostly compelling recounting of of Farnsworth and Sarnoff's parallel stories. The production is also performed by a skillful company of actors who take the audience on this little known historical journey.

In his return to playwriting, celebrated film and television writer Aaron Sorkin's signature style lends itself to the remarkable story of the invention that changed our lives. In 1929, two ambitious visionaries race against each other to invent a device called "television." Separated by two thousand miles, each knows that if he stops working, even for a moment, the other will gain the edge. Who will unlock the key to the greatest innovation of the 20th century: the ruthless media mogul, or the selftaught Idaho farm boy? The answer comes to compelling life in the regional premiere of this "firecracker of a play" (The Chicago Sun-Times).

BWW Review: LOVE AND INFORMATION at Forum Theatre

While there is nothing particularly easy about this play, it is a unique viewing experience that every area theatergoer should have.

Photo Flash: First Look at Lisa Kron's WELL at 1st Stage

"This play is not about my mother and me," begins the character, Lisa. But, of course, it is about her mother, and her mother's extraordinary ability to heal a changing neighborhood, despite her inability to heal herself. The 1st Stage production of Well by Lisa Kron features Laura Artesi, Audrey Bertaux, Edward Christian, Marquis D. Gibson, Lolita Marie, and Elizabeth Pierotti. BWW Review: WELL at 1st Stage

Why are some people well and others unwell? Playwright Lisa Kron's Well, asks the hard questions. In this s-called 'multi-character theatrical exploration,' Kron (Adurey Bertaux) is the star in her play-within-a-play chronicling her real-life experiences growing up in Lansing, Michigan in the 1960s.

1st Stage Presents Lisa Kron's Riveting Play WELL

"This play is not about my mother and me," begins the character, Lisa. But, of course, it is about her mother, and her mother's extraordinary ability to heal a changing neighborhood, despite her inability to heal herself. Lisa Kron's "theatrical exploration of a universal experience" spans from her childhood in an integrating neighborhood in Lansing, Michigan to her stay at an allergy unit in Chicago when she was 19; exploring the interaction between those two stories of healing. This compelling exploration spins out of control into riotously funny and unexpected territory as Lisa takes the audience on a journey to discover why some people are sick and some people are well and the lengths to which we will go to understand each other.

BWW Review: Exceptional Acting Fills Theater J's THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG

While aspects of Wendy Wasserstein's play come off as dated, it nevertheless brings comfort to those wrestling with societal expectations and struggling to discover their true identity and purpose.

Theater J presents the Tony Award-nominated THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG by Wendy Wasserstein, which plays now through February 21, 2016. This heartfelt comedy follows the three Rosensweig sisters who are different as can be - a no-nonsense international banker, a kvelling mother of four and a bohemian world-traveling journalist. When the three hilariously reunite at Sara's London home for her 54th birthday celebration, a barrage of suitors and unexpected revelations make for one remarkable weekend. BWW Reviews: PASSION PLAY presented by Forum Theatre

When Sarah Ruhl was a student at Brown University, she embarked on a journey that would culminate in her sprawling epic, Passion Play, which was first performed at Arena Stage in 2005. Her three act tome tells the story of a group of actors performing the story of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each act is set in a different time frame, yet what happens off-stage, which vaguely mirrors the actions on stage, is the heart of the story.

BWW Reviews: A Dark and Timely THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE at Constellation Theatre

Constellation's spell-binding production of Timberlake Wertenbaker's The Love of the Nightingale may have an old-fashioned name or two, but it is as timely a production as you will ever see. Director Allison Arkell Stockman understands that Greek mythology, like tragedy itself, is a canvas upon which we paint our darkest fears and ponder their meaning. The play paints a complex picture in which victims, bystanders and perpetrators compete for the audience's sympathy; and with Constellation's consistently strong performances, the journey is one of the most thought- provoking I have seen this season.

BWW Reviews: History Comes Alive With Theater J's THE HAMPTON YEARS

Under the taut and subtle direction of Shirley Serotsky and graced with a tremendously talented class, Theater J's The Hampton Years is nothing short of a triumph. Local playwright Jacqueline E. Lawton has given us a vital part of our history back-the humble but compelling beginnings of two towering figures in African-American art, John Biggers and Samella Lewis, who studied under Austrian refugee Viktor Lowenfeld at Virginia's Hampton Institute.
