World Premiere of Iraq War Opera FALLUJAH Set to Open at Long Beach Opera Tonight


Long Beach Opera (LBO) announces the world premiere of Fallujah, the first opera composed about the Iraq War experience. This powerful work by Canadian composer Tobin Stokes and Iraqi-American librettist Heather Raffo is about the anguish of war, the residual scars of battle, and the search for hope and redemption. Like many veterans returning from combat, the opera's central character struggles to come to terms with the violence he has experienced and to reconnect the broken bonds to his family and friends.

Long Beach Opera (LBO) announces the world premiere of Fallujah, the first opera composed about the Iraq War experience. COT to Offer Events Alongside THERESE RAQUIN


Chicago Opera Theater (COT) presents two special Viewpoint events in conjunction with the Chicago Premiere of Tobias Picker's “Thérèse Raquin” February 20-28, 2015 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance (205 E. Randolph Street). Chicago Opera Theater's production of “Thérèse Raquin” will be conducted by COT's General Director Andreas Mitisek and directed veteran opera director Ken Cazan. With a sensual score that mirrors the lovers' turbulent affair, this tale of torrid romance and scandal features a libretto by critically-acclaimed writer Gene Scheer. Tickets are now on sale at ?chicagooperatheater.org for $35-$125. Press are invited to attend the Friday, February 20 performance.

Long Beach Opera (LBO) presents Argentine composer Oswaldo Golijov and librettist David Henry Hwang's powerful Grammy Award-winning opera on May 20 and May 26, 2012 at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach, CA. Based on the life of famous writer Federico Garcia Lorca and his murder by Fascists during the Spanish Civil War, Ainadamar celebrates Lorca's fight for artistic, political and personal freedom.

Long Beach Opera to Present THE BREASTS OF TIRESIAS, TEARS OF A KNIFE, 3/11,17


On March 11 and March 17, 2012, Long Beach Opera (LBO) will perform two comic examples of opera at its most absurd, Francis Poulenc's The Breasts of Tiresias and Bohuslav Martinu's Tears of a Knife. Sung in English with English supertitles and staged at the intimate Center Theater in Long Beach, the operas are sure to confound, enchant, and amuse. Ken Roht (The Good Soldier Schweik) returns to LBO to direct these surreal works along with Ani Maldjian, Robin Buck and Suzan Hanson in starring roles. A highlight of the production will be sculptures and masks designed by artist Wen Wen Hsu.
