Omaha Performing Arts presents an exquisiteblend of Celtic, folk, and jazz when the Alison Brown Quartet takes the stage at the 1200Club in the Holland Performing Arts Center's Scott RecitAl Hall on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. Recognized for her music's "unique sonic signature and inescapable beauty,"(Billboard Magazine) Alison Brown's international reputation as a banjo player is the directresult of her efforts to push the instrument out of its familiar Appalachian settings and intonew musical territory.

As a teenager, Brown honed her craft with some of the best pickers and singers inthe industry, traveling the country with renowned fiddler Stuart Duncan. A first place finish atthe Canadian National Banjo Championship helped her land a one-night gig at the Grand OleOpry. Her professional music career then took a detour - Brown attended Harvard, studyinghistory and literature, then UCLA, where she secured an MBA.

After two years of working in public finance, Brown burst onto the national scenewhen Alison Krauss asked her to join her band Union Station in 1989. Shortly thereafter,Brown began assembling material for her solo debut Simple Pleasures which later earned aGrammy® nomination.

Brown also joined Krauss for a successful three-year run thatincluded a spot on Krauss' Grammy®-winning album I've Got That Old Feeling, as well asbluegrass music's highest accolade for an instrumentalist - the International Bluegrass MusicAssociation Banjo Player of the Year in 1991. Brown has since made a total of four records, receiving critical and popular acclaim for her role as a bandleader and composer. Her mostrecent jazz-tinged release, Out of the Blue, featured the smooth sound of her custom electricnylon-string banjo.
