{One Night Only!!!} Actor/Writer/Emcee Malik Work bares his soul and shares a piece of his story as well as NYC history. This particular story is a sneak peak into the world of hip hop, jazz and nightlife in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, early millennium.
Through laughter and tears, "Verses At Work" inspires and educates. It seamlessly intertwines verse, video, live music, musical theater, hip-hop, spoken word, dance, and conventional monologue in a captivating, vibrant and energetic production. This iteration of the show promises to be especially poignant.
"Verses at Work" has had a few iterations. It has been adapted into an award winning film; Work earned a nomination for best solo performance in the original staged production at Theater for the New City, the show was also featured at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda South Africa, and Work recently performed a version in tribute to Homers Odyssey at Park Avenue Armory. However, this will be the first immersive version with live instruments and guest artists. This time it will also be performed in Nublu, the very club where so much of the narrative of the show takes place.
All this is just in time for Black History Month and Valentines Day weekend. Mr. Work's penchant for the truly epic knows no boundaries, and he has raised the stakes once again. South African press called him "the griot from New York, Shakespeare of the streets."
Come find out why in this fiercely original piece of hip hop theater, performed by a visionary theater artist.
