Sacred Circle Theatre Company presents
Dutchman by Amiri Baraka /
Stop Kiss by Diana Son
New York City. 1960s. A hot, crowded Subway lurches beneath a city teeming with racial inequality.
New York City. 1990s. The dark of night falls on a public park in a certain part of town, the site of a burgeoning gay haven.
Sacred Circle Theatre Company presents a double bill of desire and destruction, of unbridled sexuality and unthinkable violence.
In Amiri Baraka’s Dutchman, a devilishly seductive white woman sets her sights on a young black man. As they rattle uptown on a crowded subway car, their encounter moves swiftly from chance flirtation to calculated murder.
In Diana Son’s Stop Kiss, two women struggle to navigate a queer new longing for each other. As they finally dare to share a kiss, a stranger’s blows transform their furtive romance into an unspeakable tragedy.
Sacred Circle Theatre Company boldly presents these two plays in one room, with one cast. Placed in conversation, Dutchman/Stop Kiss reveals a shocking, immediate, and intersectional landscape of hate crimes in New York City.
What is the legacy of our city? Whose body is afforded the right to live? What are the forces that prevent certain lives from being lived fully? And in the wake of violence and trauma, can marginalized communities imagine a proud existence free from the controlling shackles of fear?
Featuring Mia Longenecker, Rebecca Ford Travis, Dontonio Demarco, Cassandra DeMarco, Éamon Boylan, Craig Porter, Singer Joy, and Sonja Einem
with an interactive installation curated by Marlee Miller
Designs by Sarah Bedrick
