Urban Research Theater Presents Two Months Of Performances & Related Events

By: Jun. 29, 2010

Urban Research Theater is about to launch a two-month long, completely independent theater project at a historical venue in Midtown West. Our goal is to create a new kind of urban space in which performance serves as the center of an extended artistic, social, and intellectual community.

The following events will take place at Medicine Show Theatre, 549 West 52nd Street:

An extended run of PLAY/WAR, our own highly physical, song-based performance
An intensive workshop series with guest teachers from other NYC theater companies
An academic symposium on "Masculinity and Embodied Practice"
Social events bringing together local theatre, dance, and music communities
A summer camp for children involving dance and art therapists
This promises to be a major event in the off-off-Broadway season, bringing together artists, students, spectators, critics, performers, scholars, and children to discuss, share, and witness the many aspects of live performance. More than 30 artists and scholars from different fields have signed on to participate in these events, which we hope will reach between 500 and 1000 people.

THE STORY: AN ARTISTIC LABORATORY FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

We invite journalists to witness and chronicle how theater can be a hub for social exchange, a space for community dialogue, and a mode of embodied research. For Urban Research Theater, live performance is a fundamental aspect of urban life in addition to a commercial product.

Urban Research Theater has performed and taught throughout NYC at Movement Research, Lincoln Center, Actors Movement Studio, Dance Theatre Workshop, and the Centre for Performance Research. For more information and details, please visit www.urbanresearchtheater.com.
