In this day and age when budgets for Broadway musicals are reaching unprecedented highs and audiences expect to see a spectacle, often the very foundation of the musical - the score- is overlooked. In Broadway For Broke People, a one-night cabaret performance to benefit Theatrical Gems, the music takes center stage.

Broadway For Broke People presents an evening of songs from famous and infamous bigbudget musicals. The songs are stripped of their spectacle and given a chance to shine (or not, as the case may be). The event will be held at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre, 61 Christopher Street, on Saturday, April 2 at 9:30 PM.

The performer lineup stars Michal Salonia, Kenney M. Green, Carissa Massaro, Tara Novie, Erin O'Neil, and local singer-songwriter Andy Mac, with musical direction by Steven H. Taylor, and introducing the Broadway For Broke People Chorus, a group of young performers making their cabaret debuts. The Chorus features Benjamin Chambers, Caitlin Ferchaw, Seth Price, Ashley Primavera, and Megan Taylor.

The performance includes songs from The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Tarzan, Starlight Express, Taboo, Lestat, Titanic, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and more.

Tickets are $15 plus a two-drink minimum and can be reserved online at www.theduplex.com or by calling (212) 255-5438. Tickets will be purchased at the door. Theatrical Gems strives to educate audiences about the past, present, and future of theater.

Through the entertaining and engaging presentation of popular classics, new works, and underappreciated relics, we hope to expand horizons and tastes with the goal of preserving these works of art for future generations of theatergoers. Theatrical Gems is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization.
