The Tank Presents Generation 9/11 So Far / So Close 9/10-24

By: Sep. 08, 2011

Generation 9-11: So Far / So Close is a fast-paced, moving, and funny one-man show that explores how a generation was affected by September 11th from afar - via TV, internet, and phone - 10 years later. The show refracts 9/11 through the memories of ordinary people, right up to the present day. The show is based on over a 150 first-person accounts from interviews conducted by Mr Wolfe in 2001-02 and 2010-11 with people ages 18 - 38. These stories were changed, reframed, and combined. The end result is a complex and storied portrait of where Mr Wolfe's generation is 10 years later.

More about the show:

"Chris Wolfe...set[s] to defining [his] characters with bright colors and big thick lines."
-Back Stage West
Hot on the heels of a critically-acclaimed run at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Chris Wolfe is bringing his one man show, Generation 9/11 to The Tank. "How does this affect my generation? That was one of my first questions in the months after the attacks," says Producer/Performer Chris Wolfe. "I started a documentary in 2001 that explored this question, which culminated in a trip to Ground Zero for the one-year anniversary of the attacks. But what I realized is that it was too soon to be asking this question. As the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 approaches, I've been interviewing people and trying to figure out what's changed: Is there a Generation 9/11?"

The show is a 50-minute, multi-cultural mash-up of different points of view-male, female, liberal, conservative, Christian, Islamic, affected, distant - but the focus is on people who were not there. Rather than focusing on survivors, rescuers, victims or family members, Generation 9/11 features everyday people that found out by turning on the news - people at a distance - but all of whom were impacted by an event with repercussions that affected the entire world over the past decade.

The show marks a homecoming for Mr. Wolfe, who stopped acting after graduating with a degree in Drama in 2002. He says, "Ironically, 9/11 was a contributing factor in my choIce To leave acting. Someone else described the period after the attacks as a "crisis of relevance." Why does what I do matter? When I contemplated doing a one-person show, the topic selected itself."
