The Brick Theater Presents DEATH IS A SCREAM 6/11-23

These and other death-dealing characters await you in Esther Crow's one-woman variety show, DEATH IS A SCREAM. Chock full of gallows humor and "untimely" music, this show will take you by surprise. ESTHER CROW (Writer/Performer) has performed in numerous improv and sketch comedy groups in San Francisco and New York, including Killing My Lobster, which won "Best of Fringe" in the 1999 San Francisco Fringe Festival. Her first solo show, People Like Us, premiered in the 2001 New York Fringe Festival, and monologues from her most recent show, Pickled (also directed by Rabeah Ghaffari), were developed and performed at the People's Improv Theater in 2007-2008. She is the lead singer of the local garage band, The Electric Mess (www.theelectricmess.com), portraying one of her many characters, Chip Fontaine. Most recently she played multiple roles in two of Trav S.D.'s plays: Willy Nilly, which sold out its 2009 NY Fringe Festival run at Dixon Place, and was part of the Fringe Encore Series at The Actors Playhouse, and Kitsch which ran in November, 2009, at Theater For The New City. A Toast to Memo, a short film she wrote and acted in [directed by Mai La Thai], received "Official Honoree" status for the 2010 Webby Awards.

RABEAH GHAFFARI (Director) is an Iranian-born writer, film editor, filmmaker, director and actress. As an actress/director, she has performed and directed shows at many New York theaters including La MaMa, ETC, Theatre 22, The Judith Anderson, the Producers Club and The Kitchen. Her film acting credits include Windows, a film by Shoja Azari (Official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival 2006) and Sam Neave's Almost In Love. As a filmmaker, she has made a feature length documentary, The Troupe, about a Ta'ziyeh troupe's journey from Iran to NYC to perform at the Lincoln Center Festival. The film featured Tony Kushner and was produced by Shirin Neshat. Her film editing credits include a documentary by filmmaker, Zohreh Shayesteh called Inside Out (Competition selection of the Tribeca Film Festival 2006) and Ms. Shayesteh's film, Picking Apples, Drinking Tea. As a writer, Miss Ghaffari has written a screenplay, Neyshapoor, which was an official selection of the IFP/Emerging Narrative 2005. She was also a participant of the Berlin Film Festival's Talent Campus 2005 and a Fellow of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab 2006 in conjunction with the Royal Film Commission of Jordan. She recently finished her first novel, Caspian's Sea. She directed Esther Crow's most recent collection of monologues, Pickled, at the People's Improv Theater in 2007-2008. This is her second collaboration with Esther.

THE BRICK was founded in 2002 by Robert Honeywell and Michael Gardner. Formerly an auto-body shop, a yoga center, and various storage spaces, this brick-walled garage in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was completely refurbished as a state-of-the-art performance space. Since then, The Brick has launched, produced and presented hundreds of world-premiere stage works from New York emerging artists and theater-makers from around the globe.
