Literally Alive Theatre's new musical, "Treasure Island", with music by Michael Sgouros, book and lyrics by Brenda Bell, will open February 11th and run through May 10th at the Players Theatre located at 115 MacDougal Street (between West 3rd and Bleecker) in the West Village.

The production, which is based on the classic novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1883, celebrates courage, adventure, and as the character Dr. Livesey says "the wisdom of youth". The story follows the tale of Jim Hawkins, played Peter Pan-style by Meg Lanzarone, as a young lad whose life changes forever the day a mysterious old sea captain stubbles into his parents inn. Jim meets suspicious sea men including Black Dog and the blind man Pew, all of whom are after just one thing - the old captains treasure map!

Luckily for us, Jim, who is "smart as paint", finds the map first and sets sail for an "adventure of importance" where he meets the one-leg pirate Long John Silver, the marooned cheese-loving sailor Ben Gunn and a band of swashbuckling pirates on Treasure Island. While seeking buried pirate treasure, Jim finds the real treasure - within himself.

This tale about courage, discovery and the voyage everyone must make to find their true self, is enhanced with original music performed by an all-percussion trio. And what pirate musical would be complete without plenty of sword-fighting? The production is filled with funny-bone tickling pirate fights skillfully coordinated by the productions director Carlo Rivieccio.
Prior to each performance, families may participate in an interactive arts workshop. Here the audience discovers how different art forms bring literature to life. Each child gets to create their own treasure chest, discover what is special about themselves and store it away in their chest to take home. Coupled with the show, this two-hour experience adds up to a fun-filled afternoon for the entire family.
