THE COMING OF ANTICHRIST Opens Tonight at The American Theatre of Actors

By:

A rare production of the medieval play, The Coming of Antichrist opens at The American Theatre of Actors tonight, August 2nd, for five performances.

Directed by Jeff Dailey, The Coming of Antichrist is a play first performed in the 15th century. It is a poetic drama that deals with the problem and conquest of evil. Based on a medieval legend, it shows how the Antichrist attempts to convince humanity that he is God and that all should obey him. To the original audience, this was a true story. The question of how evil came into the world and how to deal with it has consumed people for millenia.

In this play, Antichrist is pretty successful at convincing all - including some zombies and demons - of his divine powers, until a combination of prophets and angels are able to subdue him. The play was originally written in Middle English. This environmental production, which sets the play in a timeless location, modernizes the text, while retaining the medieval flavor of the original, including a pair pf comical devils.

Tickets are 15.00 and may be reserved by calling 212-581-3044. Tickets can also available at tdf.org or purchased at the box office prior to performance. Performances are Wednesday, August 2nd to Saturday, August, 5th at 8pm. There will be a matinee performance on Sunday, August 6th at 2pm. Please call 212-581-3044 regarding accessibility access.

The cast for The Coming of Antichrist features Oganes Abramian, Tre'mar Baptiste, Jeremy Carter, Nicholas Kennedy, Dillon Monroe, Susan Spangenberg, Annecia Steiniger, Rytis Valiunas and Frank Vindigni. The technical director for this production is Terry Prideaux.

Jeff Dailey, director, is a stage director who specializes in verse drama. In recent years, he has directed plays from ancient Sumerian, Greece, and Rome, along with medieval and Renaissance English drama. Dr. Dailey is the author of many studies of early theatre and literature, and whose production of Plautus' The Captives in 2016 (the first New York production in over a century) was awarded a Jean Dalrymple Prize for Innovative Theatre.
