THE CAVE: A FOLK OPERA New Fantasy Folk Musical Will Be Presented At Access Theater Image

"The Cave: A Folk Opera," a new folk musical theatre piece inspired by the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, and told entirely through original folk music, will be presented in concert at Access Theatre May 17th-20th, 2018. This production is presented by The Daughters Collective in association with Access Theater. Performances will be at 380 Broadway, New York, N.Y. on May 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased online at TheCaveFolkOpera.com.

In an opium den at the turn of the 20th century, Willow sacrifices her life to pay off her father's debt by working in an occult underground society called "The Cave." In this musical exploration of fairy tales, myths, and spiritualism, Willow fights to find light not only in the grim and strange shadow-world around her, but also within herself.

"The Cave: A Folk Opera" was last produced by The Daughters Collective in an award-winning production at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival. The show has also had a previous production at Access Theatre, has been seen in concert at music venues around NYC such as Rockwood Music Hall and The Bowery Electric, and has had workshop productions at Sarah Lawrence College, Vassar College, and in London at The British American Drama Academy.

"The Cave: A Folk Opera" is written by Melanie Rose Thomas, Directed by Sarah Plotkin, with Musical Direction by Suzanne Karpinski, Choreography by Jenisa De Castro, and Dramaturgy by Gabriella Steinberg. The cast includes Andy Danh as "The Father," Ashley Coia as "Celestina/Charlotte," Lacy Rose as "Ondine/Leila," Lukas Papenfusscline as "The Master," Melanie Rose Thomas as "Willow," and Mijon Zulu as "Edwin."

The Daughters Collective is an all woman-identifying artist collective and produces interdisciplinary work inspired by ritual. The collective includes over 15 artists across different genres. The Daughters seeks to marry old world traditions to a modern perspective, with community building and women's empowerment at the center of their values.
