In THE FUNDALMENTALIST, Markus, a reformed pastor, and Heidi, his former student now turned religious extremist, meet again after years apart. Heidi has come to save Markus from going to hell. A spiritual battle develops through their pursuit to try to change each other. But beneath it all, lurks a darker past they can't escape: a romantic and sexual encounter, which has deeply affected them both. THE FUNDAMENTALIST is a suspenseful two-character drama that offers an astute and nuanced investigation of fundamentalist belief and encourages us to reflect on human values, worldview, faith and responsibility to each other. THE FUNDAMENTALIST is the first Scandinavian play to be presented at FringeNYC. This is Mr. Smith's latest leading stage role since garnering critical praise starring in the Modern Stage production of the new play Miracle Day at Theatres at 45 Bleecker last summer
